Last week I ran into an acquaintance at a social function whom I have not seen in several months. The first time I glanced over at her I was thinking "who's that? that can't be 'Lisa'!" A little while later I saw her again and she recognized me, smiled and said hello, which is when I realized she was 'Lisa'. The reason I didn't recognize her was that she had lost a phenomenal amount of weight. Now usually I'm happy for people when they have obviously worked hard at losing extra pounds. But first let me say that although she had some pounds to lose, she was not obese, just a bit overweight. However, now she is just a shadow of her former self. She is so slender! And while you might admire her new physique, you can't help notice that she also looks older. And while she doesn't look like she just came out of a concentration camp, she honestly has no extra pounds anywhere. I was left speechless. All week long I've mulled this over and have wondered if I'm jealous, or if she has something going on that I don't know about, like some health problem of some sort. She looks so different that I'm a bit concerned about her. What do I say? Nothing? Do I ignore her weight loss? Do I find something kind to say? How would you respond?
