Ken has been a patient at the Wound Care Center since last March. Dr. M was very surprised at the progress that Ken has made in the last two months. When Ken went for his appointment on Friday morning, the nurse got out the camera and ruler to measure and take a picture of his wound. She was very surprised to find there was nothing to take a picture of and no wound to measure. WOOHOO!!! The look on her face was priceless!!! I find it unbelievable that Ken is done with the Wound Care Center for the time being...as I am sure he and they were too. As long as we can keep his lymphedema controlled...which means the swelling must stay down and the skin moisturized to stay soft. Anything to make sure he doesn't get any open sores on his legs and feet, all should be well!!! When the skin swells to the point of breaking open, problems will begin anew.
It is amazing all that Ken has gone through this past year. He cut his left leg at work on a stack of rusting metal in February...just a minor scrape...nothing at all to worry about, fighting a severe infection to the point of almost losing his leg, cellulitis in both legs, breast cancer and a complete mastectomy, lymphedema in both feet and legs and severe pain from neuropathy in both his feet and legs. To top that off, he was diagnosed as being a diabetic. They say that sometimes the body will react in different ways to trauma. When Ken went to the emergency room with the infection in his leg in March, the doctors talked about having to amputate his leg. He told them that he walked into the hospital and he would be walking out. They wanted to admit him and he insisted on coming home braced with enough antibiotics for a small town it seemed. (I think he was afraid they would amputate if he stayed there.)
Although he is off work on a two year medical leave while he waits to hear if he will qualify for his disability pension and social security disability, he continues to keep a pretty positive attitude. Praise the Lord for our amazing bodies and the complex machines that they are. Don't let life get you down for you are truly stronger than you every thought you could be...
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're traveling seems all uphill;
When the funds are low and the debts are high--
When you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit:
Rest if you must, but don't you quit!
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won--had he stuck it out!
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow!
Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tints of the clouds of doubt;
And you can never tell how close you are--
It may be near when it seems so far.
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit:
It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit!
