I'd like to believe that people laugh because they don't understand, but I don't think that's it. Maybe people laugh because it makes them uncomfortable, like it's somehow contagious. And KauraKitten's right, sadly, some people laugh because by laughing, it diminishes us, and therefore makes them feel better about themselves.

You've done great, and you deserve to feel proud of yourself. 26lbs is awesome. Congratulations! :)

You have a right to be upset. I think that part of the reason people laugh at us or make fun of us is due to the way society portrays 'beautiful people'. It's easy to tell yourself not to care what these people say, but it's hard to MAKE yourself not care. To those who laugh at you, just think that soon you'll be laughing at them! Don't let this stop your progress. You're doing a wonderful job with being healthy! emoticon for sharing this with us; it was very touching ad honest. emoticon

First off, let me say you have some of hte most beautiful eyes I have seen in a really long time!
Myself, I am still over 300 lbs...and really look forward to becoming a 2der. I understand the part where you're p!ssed off at someone making a snide comment. I guess I've always been too self absorbed to let it overly bother me. Anytime I've had someone make me feel the way you feel, I've turned it back on them in defense. I'm fat...but you're short, or bucktoothed, or orange tan, or dressed badly, etc. Everyone has insecurities that make them feel vulnerable, we just wear ours more visably. I'm ashamed to say that I've been made fun of like that by teenage kids which made me angry...and I've actually turned it around on them and made them cry with thier own insecurities. I've also been to the Philippines where the picture thing was very common as well. Both because of my size and my skin color...but I put it down to they didn't experience and didn't know any better. But there is little excuse for someone who encounters it on a daily basis. I hope you feel better and am super glad you got it out! You SHOULD be proud of your weight loss! that is awesome! keep on keepin' on!!

I have a theory on this. I think that people (especially teens and kids who do not know better or do not care to hurt your feelings) laugh because they make jokes about fat people on tv and movies all of the time. I get soooo upset when I hear "fat jokes" on tv - especially when it is men talking about the "fat chick" and making fun. I hate it - it is hurtful - and unnecessary!

You deserve respect and I agree with the other comment-ers that say - you should definitely say something and stand up for yourself. If these kid's parents aren't willing to teach them, then someone should straighten them out and teach them respect. If they want to run their mouths and be disrespectful - then you should be able to tell them what you think too!!

Im so glad you came on and vented here!

You should have called them on it!! You'd be surprised how quickly people (especially kids) back down when their cruelty is confronted. I know it's hard, but remember that you're a better, more compassionate person than they'll ever be.

People have this thing about being better than someone else. It's why bullies become bullies. It's the only way they can feel good about themselves when they've been bullied by others. Then their kids see their parents act this way and they pick up on it even though they haven't been bullied. People have these ideas in their head that overweight people don't try, that they're lazy, and they don't understand none of us want to be this way. You're right, you HAVE accomplished so much! That's what you look at. You will have a better body, a better mind, and a better life and they will always be immature. So mentally be that bully knowing that you have it going on. Or be like me (if it's an adult making the comments) and remind them how pathetic their life must be that they have to survive on their own ignorance.
