Beating My Gene Pool
Friday, February 25, 2011
It's in my genes. Everybody in my family is fat, so it's not surprising that I am too... Ever heard those words before? I regret to say I've uttered them on a few (all right: many) occasions. You see, on my father's side of the family, when we get together, people think there's a double chin convention in town. You can tell who's a "native" and who's an "in-law" just by looking at their chins. You have almost as many cases of hypertension as there are people. I've clearly inherited my dad's gene pool. But I am determined to beat it. I think the whole "in the genes" thing has a lot to do with learned behaviour: we eat the same food, we pack on the pound (and we ALL love to eat), we are not active, we gain weight. You get the idea...
Sure, I may gain faster than others and lose slower than some, but my genes are not the only factor in the equation. I also have my say. So I'll do whatever it takes. I am determined to lose my extra pounds (62 down, 23 still to go) ONCE AND FOR ALL. This is the last time. I won't ever have to diet again, because I'm changing my whole way of eating, of exercising... of living. And it's worth all the trouble.
