The Year I was 40... (birthday post w/photos)

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

The year I was 40 was NOT the year I was "over the hill" was the year I started climbing a new hill. It was the year I became an athlete

(a year ago... when I was just turning 40)
The year I was 40...
I started to run
I ran for 30 seconds and was out of breath
I ran for 1 minute and could see a little improvement
I ran for 3 minutes and felt like I'd run a marathon
I ran for 20 minutes and had to celebrate
I ran for 30 minutes and finished C25K (Couch to 5K)
I ran for 3.1 miles and entered my first 5K as a runner
I ran a Half Marathon and put a "13.1" sticker on my car
I became a runner; an athlete
I started dreaming of a Marathon

The year I was 40...
I decided to lose weight
I started at 159
I lost a few pounds
I lost 10 pounds, and was in the 140's for the first time in many year
I lost 15 pounds and was at 144, my college weight
I lost 23 pounds and was at 136, my high school weight
I lost 25 pounds
I lost until my neighbor, friend and coach thought I'd lost 50-60 pounds

The year I was 40...
I started at a size 14
I lost until my 14s could no longer be belted on me and bought 12s
I lost until my 12s could barely be belted on me
I lost until my dresses looked like tents
I lost until I got in my first size 10 ever
I lost until I was in the single digits and bought my first size 8 ever...I thought it was a fluke
I bought more size 8s
I lost until I no longer wore L and XL tops, but M

I renewed my dream to compete in a sprint triathlon
I started swimming lessons
I bought a bike and had a wreck
I paid the entry fee to my first sprint triathlon

I started with a personal trainer again
I did strength training at home and at the gym
I did my first real pushups
I did 12 pushups in a row
I did my first pushups with a clap in between
I held a plank for 90 seconds

I tried boot camp
I tried yoga and pilates
I tried zumba
I tried rowing
I swam 'laps' in the murky lake
I played tennis again

I got up at 5:20 am to exercise
I kept every running date I ever made with myself
I worked out in the mornings while my house slept and then in the evenings, too
I used the Wii, the jumprope, the gym, the great outdoors
I bought new shoes, new clothes, new accessories, new 'fuels'

I switched to a healthier bread
I started eating veggies almost daily
I ate more chicken and less beef
I started eating Wheat Thins instead of chips
I started drinking 1% milk... and later skim milk
I started drinking Lean Body... and later chocolate milk

I read books about runners and fitness and triathlons
I bought subscriptions to running and fitness magazines

I tracked my food on Spark People
I made SP friends (and I'm so thankful!)
I joined SP groups
I cheered on other SPers as they cheered me on
I blogged about my journey

(recent photo)

I lost weight
I became stronger
I set goals and achieved them
I gained confidence
I became an athlete
...when I was 40
