I ran the 10th Anniversary Lost Dutchman Half Marathon yesterday. The weather didnít look too good going into it Ė the forecast was for rain and cold Ė and my friend John was able to do it with me. I had also done a hilly trail run on Saturday, so I wasnít sure how that would affect things. Not an auspicious start to the day! However, I decided to go for it anyway.
When I got out to the site of the race it was cloudy and cool, but not raining. For this event you have to park and take a shuttle about a mile to the start area. When I got to the start area, it seemed to me that the crowd was not as big as they expected, probably because of the weather. I found a comfortable (dry) spot to sit for awhile and had my pre-race breakfast. When it was about 15 minutes to the start I gave my drop off bag to the folks, hit the porta-potty, and found the 11- 12 minute per mile start area. I planned to do 4 minute running, 1 minute walking alternations for as long as I could. Here are a couple of pictures from the start area and the first mile:
The race started, and as soon as I started I could feel that my quads were tight from the previous dayís trail run. However, I still had a pretty good first mile. Here are my mile splits:
During the race, there were three people that I kept going back and forth with. The course is an out and back, so on the way back I decided to try and catch up to and pass them. I got the first guy at about mile 9. The second one I caught at about mile 11. The third guy kept staying right with me until I finally passed him as we were coming up to the entry to the park and the mile 13 mark.
As I was doing mile 13, I had a quick look at my watch and thought I might be able to get under 2:30. However, I was really tight and my quads were screaming at me by that point. My final overall time was 2:30:21. I am quite pleased with this, though, because this is my best time for a half marathon in nearly 5 years. I did a 2:28:25 back on 3/12/06, and a 2:28:15 on 4/29/06. My PR is 2:21:37 on 3/9/03. Looking at that, and the conditions for this race, I think it is entirely possible I could set a new PR if I prepare for it properly. Iíll have to look for a fall event that I can work towards!
