This Goes Too Far - My Sympathy to Auburn and the Fans

Thursday, February 17, 2011

Today's news reported that an Alabama fan poisoned the 130 year old trees that Auburn students "roll" to celebrate victories. These trees were at Toomer's Corner and were part of Auburn tradition for several generations. One man is accused of applying herbicide.
I am not an Auburn fan, although my son went there for graduate school. This man killed trees that were 130 years old. He killed a tradition. This man is an Alabama fan. This was done after the comeback win by Auburn over Alabama. Yes loss is a hard thing, killing is not acceptable. You lost a game! This man is in his 60's. You think he would know better.
To me this is the same thing as someone poisoning a mascot of a college. Every college or university has some tradition that their rivals don't like. Alabama didn't like that Auburn "rolled" trees in celebration and I am sure Alabama has a tradition that Auburn doesn't like.
I am not an Auburn fan. I am a fan of traditions. I am passing on my sympathy to Auburn fans everywhere. I hope trees can be planted to carry on the tradition.

What happened was a real shame. Shame on that guy and anyone else who destroys nature.

I am an Auburn fan and it's so sad that it has has come to this point.
I'll be making a trip down in the next couple of weeks to hopefully see the trees for the 1st time before they are gone.

My students in Rural Alaska often read the news from the lower 48 and ask me, "Why did they do that?" (what ever that is). My answer, "I'm sad to say a large number of people are whacked."

I was in a state of unbelief when I heard this tonight! Yes, he should know better and should be setting an example for those younger than he is. I hope they can replace those trees, as it appears they may not be able to save them.

I couldn't believe this when I heard it on the news. It's sad - the age of those trees and the traditions. Humans never cease to amaze me.

That was a horrible thing for that man who should have known better, to do. I would be ashamed if I were an Alabama fan. Shame on him. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Such a horrendous waste, It really irks me when someone does something so stupid. I hope they make him plant new trees.
