Finally, I Think I'm Doing it Right!

Tuesday, February 08, 2011

I honestly feel I am eating healthier than probably ever before in my life. As I've given up the Fast food runs, eat 4-6 veggies and fruits most days and cut way down on meat portions and even have one meatless night a week--usually pasta. I now use Sandwich thins to make a sandwich and have all but given up on eating garlic bread, etc. as I do love carbs. When I snack I prefer eating healthy veggies & fruits as not only are they very low in calories but also low in sodium! I switched to fat-free milk and low fat yogurts and try to limit the cheese as I think the fat free ones taste like rubber--LOL. I am fighting to get healthy on my SP Journey and will be adding aquatics exercise to my life very soon--just waiting for the tour of the YMCA and the swimsuit I ordered to arrive. An almost too thin friend said to me yesterday, "You are too Heavy to Exercise". So, I told her about SP and how even people heavier than me do get daily exercise in.

I am currently on quite a few medications all prescribed by my Dr. who seems to think the cure-all is in a pill. Other than that big issue I really like my Dr. and just know the cure isn't always in the RX he want to prescribe. Unfortunately, I have Type II diabetes, high cholestrerol, high blood pressure, arthritis, osteoporosis--these conditions are I believe a result of all the years I overate highly processed and fatty foods, ate very few veggies/fruit and got very little exercise--so basically abused my once healthy body. I also was addicted to diet Pepsi and always had one around--people at work use to tease me about it--well it's not so funny now! I realize that diet soda is probably what caused the bone in my back to get weak and eventually fracture. As I've heard Pepsi can dissolve a nail when put together in a jar--Yikes, my poor bones & body!! Water or green or black tea is my beverage of choice.

So, I'm motivated to lose a significant amount of weight as I hope then I can cut way down on medications I take, have less pain, and feel more energenic and be the healthiest I can become. I don't even care very much about the "cosmetic" part of losing weight as the healthy part is the most important to me . . .and I believe to my friends and family. I plan on
re-gaining back as much of my health as I can by eating healthy and exercising--also thinking positive is important to me. . . I have observed that most morbidly obese people don't usually make it into their 80's and I want to live as long as I possibly can!!

I think SP really works for me as it is available 24/7--any time you need someone to talk to or need motivation/encouragement you can read a motivating blog/article (that is so easy to do). I go on SP daily throughout the day as time permits. I've done WW and even Jenny Craig many years ago but the once a week support wasn't enough for me to change my eating habits nor did I get the kind of encouragement and support I now get from SP friends that I connect with daily. I love the fact that all the tools you need are also available any time you need them. I learn so much from all of you and try to implement your great ideas into my daily life. There is nothing quite like it that I know of--and it really works!!

I love working out in the water. The Chiropractor doesn't like people working out in the water because of the chlorine, but because it has helped me so much that he told me now to quit! We will do this!

Jill, What a great blog! So invigorating! You make me realize..again..that a healthy lifestyle is an option. Even if I have neglected my body with so little exercise or activity. Even if I have abused my body with large portions of frequent poor choices. Thanks for sharing!!

You always have a spark, the SPARK. I feel like you have really progressed in the past month. It inspires me to really WORK at what I want . . instead of just sitting here whining about not knowing what to do, or not having time, or whatever.
THANK you for writing this blog. I feel a new wave of energy is going to get me started again. All we have to do is pay attention to our behavior, and believe in ourselves.
yay.

Glad to see you are recognizing that you are learning and moving toward a healthier lifestyle! That is awesome! As for that too skinny friend, ignore her. Only your doctor can make that call and I know of very few that would not encourage movement, and water movement will be great for you!

Jill , what a lovely positive blog.
I feel you have defiantly turned a corner.
So many good positive changes. It's when we make those changes, get rid of the bad habits and replace them with good ones, we get stronger. Mental toughness that what you are experiencing.
The water aerobics are going to be the best thing you can do.
I go 6 days a week to water aerobics. I too have many of the body ailments that you experience. But many of the thing I had to take pills for are gone, due to my weigh loss.
I feel you too will be on a lot less medicine one of these days.
I am so happy for you.
So stay strong, be positive, those better days are coming.
Your friend Tisha emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Good for you Jill. You are on the right track. And as far as the meds are concerned, as you lose weight, you may be able to change that. Of course, your doctor should be aware of your dieting goals and he will watch your meds. You may not need them someday!! Have a great week! Terri

It sounds like you have gotten your life together and are on the road to making the changes you need to get your health back. Congrats to you and keep up the good work. I am impressed with your goals and outlook. Was good to her you didmn't listen to your 'thin' friend about exercise. Aqua class will benefit you immensely. I too am trying to cut bak and then get of the diet sodas. It is one of the hardest things for me as I can't seem to find something that tastes as good to me. Good luck in all you do. Joanne

Oh, I love this blog! You're making some wonderful changes in your life and you'll definitely be seeing the benefits of that in due time. And, I'm with you on the low fat cheese, blech! It does indeed taste like rubber.

Your friend is sadly misinformed about exercise for people who are over weight. And seeing as you bought a swimsuit that may be exactly the exercise for you to start with. Grab a kickboard and see how well the works on your legs and hips and even the waistline.

I'm proud of you. Keep up the good work, get your regular checkups and watch your doctor smile as he decreases your meds over time! emoticon

Jill, I enjoyed reading your blog especially the parts where you consciously gave up the unhealthy for the healthy. You are making great strides and I know you have better bogs to write of your transforming experiences, I do look forward to reading them. All the best to you emoticon

I agree this is a special place. I have all those things you mentioned and am on several meds, but I know that my numbers will come down with the way I eat now. Your's will too. Even if you can't get off all the meds, you will find the arthritis will ache less and you will be able to do more. My long term goal is to dance at my granddaughter's wedding and as she is only 9 months old that is quite far in the future!

I SO agree with everything you said! The health benefits from living a healthier lifestyle are the important aspects of this journey we share. I was considered pre-diabetic last year but am no longer (as per my last blood work/doctor's appointment). My cholesterol is 1 point away from normal and my blood pressure is much lower. I do have more energy and endurance and my ability to do things I want to do is improving! I'm sure you're feeling much more energetic and are finding it easier to move around more too.
Thank goodness for Spark!
Stay positive!
