On today's Start Page there's a link to an article in CNN's Fortune Magazine that declares SP "The Facebook of Dieting." I'll pop a link in here, but if you click on it from the Spark Insider on your start page, you'll get a Spark Point emoticon

Yeah, it's old news (April 2010), but it's an interesting read.

SP has passed WW.com with 2.7 MILLION unique visitors per month.

SP added 6,000 new members PER DAY in 2009.

CNN calls the Spark community loyal and obsessive. Are we? Probably. lol

Spark members spend twice as much time on SP as our counterparts on WW.com.

As of the time the article was published, SP was still not profitable. Pretty eye opening to see the next sentence mention that its SEVEN FIGURE revenue is coming from ads -- and there is only one investor.

I've worked the backend of online communities. Bringing us together and providing us with all of these wonderful tools is not cheap. It made me think of a couple things we can do to give back ...

Check the Spark Store for fitness products. If we're buying anyway, why not support the community?

When making online purchases, check out the Spark People advertisers. Even if we don't purchase from the sponsors, our click-thru's help bump SP's numbers, bringing more ad revenue to the table.

Plug aside, I was pretty impressed by the numbers in the article, and it made me think about how I use the site and the community ...

* When I am on my game, I am here about 30-60 minutes a day, every weekday
* I use the nutrition & fitness trackers to stay on track
* I read the articles for motivation & information
* I try out new, healthy recipes
* I use the recipe calculator to makeover old favorites.
* I am connecting with like-minded people, forming relationships, and building my support system.

What about you? How often do you visit SP? How much time do you spend here a day? What features are you using?

    I'm probably on about 30 - 60 minutes per day, too. I use the nutrition tracker, the fitness tracker, the weight tracker, read the daily spark blogs, read health and fitness articles, use the recipe tracker,update my friends with blogs on my progress, interact with other SP members via message boards, friend feed, reading blogs and visiting Spark pages.

This will make me think differently about those ads which often irritate me.
And maybe I'll get some Spark Gear for spring!

    Very interesting article. I always wondering how the creators of a free website made money-- I figured it was from the ads but wasn't really sure. I have made some purchases from the online store- a couple workout dvds. Good to know that I am contributing!
