It's Finally Connected, I NEED Strength Training

*throws confetti in the air and dances, head thrown back, laughing all the while*

IT'S FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know about you but I am looking forward to the weekend! Not that I'm doing much exciting but seeing as it's my last quiet weekend for the month, I'm going to enjoy every bit of it.

Although on Sunday we're dropping an unexpected large amount of money on a new sofa. Ours finally bit the dust last night (it was an old Ikea one of Alan's) and there's no point in trying to repair it as it's been repaired several times already. But not only are we sofa shopping but we're also bed and mattress shopping as our mattress has also bitten the dust and we've both been complaining of sore backs over the last few months. We also need new pillows as the kinks in our necks have been increasing and our pillows are flatter than flat! In the end, though, we need them and we're going for quality items that should last us a good, loooong while.

Tomorrow is my first day doing my Burn Fat, Boost Metabolism DVD in well over a year. I dropped it in favour of NMTZ because I liked that NMTZ had more strength training and it didn't feature plyometrics. I really don't like plyometrics but I only don't like them because I find them difficult. BFBM has a mix of plyometrics, pilates, kick-boxing and good old strength-training (without weights). When I finally admitted I didn't like the DVD because I found it hard I immediately knew I was going to have to do it. I've gotten to a point in my life where I don't allow difficult things to stop me and, in fact, usually end up doing it BECAUSE it's difficult. So I'm looking at it as a challenge! I'm going to kick its butt!

And speaking of kicking butt, Alan got me, as a laugh, an Abs and Booty DVD as I keep saying I want to be reincarnated as a Brazilian woman with a great booty. So I'm going to make him do the video with me. Who knows, maybe it's actually good? Perhaps we'll check it out on Sunday!

Finally, one of the reasons I'm really on about getting this strengh training in is because I've really noticed how my lack of ab strength is affecting my back. With the excess weight in my tummy (even though it's been reduced) combined with my running and just overall everyday activity I've slowly started to notice its affects on my back. I also can't do non-modified push-ups simply because my back isn't strong enough and so I sag which causes my back to be sore for days. In other words, I'm getting to a point where I did just before I started a regular exercise routine, I'm finding a personal reason to do it. I always knew I needed to do it but I never had a good enough reason to bother, it didn't connect. But now I'm realizing it's affects on my health and my body's performance and it's becoming more and more important. So that being said, I'm starting small, just like I did with exercise, and building up. I've already carved out one day a week to devote to it exclusively but I'm going to start adding small bursts throughout my week. This starts with a plank challenge I'm joining on the Strength Training Challenges team. Currently I can just barely squeak out 30 second pulses in side plank thanks to NMTZ so my goal is to get to one minute by the end of February. I'm going to do this at least three days a week immediately after my regular workout. That's it to start. In March I may add one more to the pile and work from there!

Moving on!

I achieved all of my goals yesterday, I tracked both my food and money, I finished up my questionnaire, I searched for my chequebook (but to no avail, where the heck did I put it?!) and I did some great brainstorming for my business' webpage!

Today's Goals:

-Track food/spending.
- 60 minutes elliptical with 30 second side planks.
- Send out questionnaires.
- Work on website content.

And I'm also going to post goals for tomorrow, if I achieve them tomorrow I can relax with some wine!

Saturday's Goals:

- Track food/spending
- Do Burn Fat, Boost Metabolism
- Practice Presentation
- Clean bathroom and clean out fridge

NMTZ kicked my butt! I'm glad to know it's at my library when I need a little Jillian kick in the rear.

After age 25 we lose about .5 lbs of muscle a YEAR if we don't strength train. So it's so important to keep up with the strength training for metabolic and back support issues, not to mention that it helps maintain bone density too.

Oh and if I may make a suggestion for pillows? We got some down wrapped feather pillows on sale at the Bay last year and we LOVE them. The feather part is totally encased in a layer of down so you don't smell them and they don't poke out. But it provides a lot of support while still being soft from the down. I will never use anything else now.

Yep - strength training is so important! Way to go on deciding to do it BECAUSE it is hard and you don't like it! You ROCK and continually inspire me!!!!!

I really need to get both of those DVD's. I know Jillian scares the crap outta me...so why not tackle and take that power away??? Must do this!!!

Whether we like to admit it or not, strength training makes all the difference! Core strength is so easy to "neglect" because often it's the last part of a workout and you just want to be done already! I'm going to join in on the side plank challenge too, because I've found all the other mini-challenges are actually helping me keep my focus (imagine that!!). Best of luck and have a wonderful weekend!

That's terrific. I love my new focus on strength, too, though there is only so much time in a week! It is very important to all of my sports, though. I hope you have a terrific Friday!
