Am I brave enough to enter a cycling event?
It's been just over a year since I got Esmerelda, my beloved road bike. I've had a great time riding around my neighborhood, the wind through my helmet, the bugs in my teeth, it's all good. But I'm definitely what you'd call a novice cyclist; I've never ridden with a group and I'm very picky about my routes, so I don't run (ride) into any situations beyond my limited competency.
Last fall, my BFF and I walked the 5k route for the Albuquerque Chips n Salsa race, mostly because we liked the t-shirts. (Actually, it nearly killed my friend--she's a marathoner and could hardly restrain herself from sprinting off like a jackrabbit and leaving me in the dust.) However, since that race I've been getting emails from Active.com, letting me know about events here in Tucson, and one that's come up is the 3rd Annual Tour de Cookie (http://www.tourdecookie.com/)
, a fund-raiser for the Tucson Kids' Try-athlon and other young special-needs athletes. Gotta say, it caught my interest and I keep toying with the notion.
•It's for a good cause
•It would be good for me to do something different
•The registration is reasonable and the date works
•There's a 9-mile short course, which is just my length
•Might meet some other like-minded cyclists to ride with
•Again, nifty t-shirt!
•The race is Sunday; must decide and register soon
•I would have to make left-hand turns on busy streets, which I am very bad at
•I've never ridden in a cycling event before, and don't know the ropes or etiquette
•It would be scary for me to do something different
•There would be cookies involved and I would probably eat some.
I *want* to do this, but in the immortal words of Little Quack, "I'm scared! I'm just too scared!" I haven't gone this far outside my comfort zone in a really long time.
