Feeling so very blessed. It's been a very crazy and stressful time since my last blog entry. Took hubby to a cardiologist who did an echocardiogram and said his heart was performing at 15%, body so swollen with edema that he was drowning in his own fluid. He sent us to a hospital. We spent almost a week in the hospital.
Bad news: he's been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Which by the way, WAY more common than you would think. Good news: not diabetic, normal thyroid, normal cholesterol levels. The heart failure is due to high blood pressure (genetics) that was left untreated for years. My husband foolishly thought that, when he was diagnosed 7 yrs ago, he could control it with the way that he ate. While at the hospital, they did another echocardiogram and found out that his heart function is up to 45%. This improvement is due to the 50 pounds of fluids he lost! Yes ladies and gentlemen, I said 50 lbs!!!!
So we're home on a strict low sodium diet and restricted fluid intake. It's going to be hard. We had to get rid of almost every food item in our kitchen. All of the "healthy" low fat, sugar free food items in our pantry and fridge were LOADED with sodium. Salad dressings, mustard, everything! Looks like I'm going to be learning to be more of a cook.......
