What Now?

Friday, January 21, 2011

I finally summoned the courage to face the scales again. Hadn't weighed since well before Christmas, & was dreading it, knowing how indulgent I'd been over the holidays, especially in New Mexico. Sure enough, I have gained. The good news - only 2 lbs. I'm back to an even 260, right where I started!
Actually, there is good news here. I have been cut off from my most effective exercise (swimming) since Dec. 10. Walking outside has been limited by cold and ice to about half my usual mileage. I've tried a few indoor exercise sets, without enthusiasm and with little success - too many of the recommended moves are plainly impossible for me, or extremely painful, probably damaging. I didn't count calories at all on our trip, nor while my son was here. I was congested & feverish for 2 weeks and didn't exercise at all, but kept eating. Yet only 2 lbs. up. I think I am learning better habits, healthier cooking, even when celebrating & ignoring calories.
Also, my dh is back on board with a vengance, his usual January conversion. He is exercising 4 times a day, 3 times at home on the exer-bike and once down at the clinic on the treadmill. I'm not enthusiastic about gym machines, as I said, but today I went down with him and did the elliptical for over 10 minutes, got up to close to 2 miles per hour & dripping sweat before I got dizzy & had to fold. I picked up 2 3 lb. dumbbells and went thru some charts there finding & trying ways to use them until he was thru with his half hour on the treadmill. We are both painfully out of shape still, but at least I can get onto that machine and make it go for a while, and I got some ideas for using my baby weights at home. And, I am no where near too heavy for that machine, as I was when I started this effort. I will join him down there again, at least while the pool remains closed, and use the weights at home.
His paranoia about calories, while driving me crazy, is also forcing me to be more careful about counting them myself, especially in home cooking, keeping down the extra additions I tend to throw in, and I'm getting rid of the indulgences that crept into my pantry over the hols. We are using our stored veggies in healthy soups instead. God give me strength, we are heading down weight again!

Good for you!! Wish my hubby was weight concerned. He buys every junk food you can think of. It's difficult when you want to loss those pounds and you go to the pantry and find chips, cookies, candy, etc. I think it's great that you and your husband can do this together. emoticon emoticon
