Feeling full with Protein

I've gotten in the habit of having a bowl of oatmeal with raisins for breakfast. I like the taste, the price and the fact that it's easily available in the cafeteria where I work.

However, despite that it is nutritious and filling at the time, a couple of hours later I'll feel hungry once again. My colleague mentioned the other day that the first thing one should eat when beginning a meal is a food with plenty of protein.

So today I started out with greek yogurt which I added a little bit of dried oatmeal to - and I really do feel fuller! 12oz of the fat-free yogurt with the oatmeal has about the same amount of calories as my normal oatmeal w/raisins & a piece of fruit breakfast, but 2 hours later I don't feel like I need to snack as badly (although I love to snack, and snack on fruit all day).

As a vegetarian, making sure I get enough protein can be difficult, so I'm definitely going to stick to starting off the day with protein. If I'm really craving oatmeal with raisins, I'll make sure to add some milk. emoticon

    It works for us omnivores, too. Eating protein fills you up and curbs your appetite. Plus, you need the protein to build muscle. A win-win!

    Feeling full at the start of the day really ruins me so I avoid protein like the plague in the mornings. I'm happy to eat just fruit which gives me a happy buzz all the way to lunchtime.
