Getting drunk on rum balls

Saturday, January 08, 2011

Did you know that when you make rum balls, you actually absorb some of the alcohol through your hands? I didn't know that until one summer, when I sat with my old Seattle buddies and made a huge batch of rum balls, and became quite tipsy. Although I'm sure the fumes add to that, as well. (And yes, my friends make rum balls in the summer, so by the holidays the rum is STRONG!!!!!!!!)

I picked up my holiday package from one friend - it arrived before we left for Spain, but sat at the post office - and sure enough, there are two containers (6 or so each) of rum balls. Which are currently in the kitchen. Because I have a lot to accomplish today, like painting kippot (yarmulkes) for the synagogue. And getting ready for my students' art show next week. Things that require some concentration.

Because once I eat one rum ball, several others follow. As a SparkBuddy said, if it is in the house, I will eat it. So if the rum balls are here, yes, they will all jump into my mouth, one after another, little drunk chocolate lemmings. Except that they know exactly what they are doing, jumping into my mouth. They are fulfilling their purpose in life - they will get me drunk.

So I am saving them for this evening, after I make a nice dinner and then clean up. Fortunately (for me if not my waist and hips) DH does not like rum balls. Nor dark dark chocolate, which my friends use. So the rum balls are all MINE.

I will do my best to make them last at least two nights.

Maybe I should go hide one container right now.

This is the first I've heard of rum balls, and they sound amazing! My mom used to make chocolate balls rolled in coconut when I was little. They are pretty much made from chocolate cake, I think. Yum!

LOVE rum balls -- haven't had any for years and years, nobody I know makes them, darn it. And it doesn't sound to me as if there is a sufficient quantity to warrant anything other than indulging in them . . . and of course if they're at your house you intend to eat them!!

Thanks for your comments on my temptation blog. When you get through the rumballs, you might consider placating the chocolate addiction (which I share, of course) by mixing 1 tbsp cocoa powder (5 cal) into a fat free sugar free vanilla yogourt (35 cal)!!

Never liked the things either--not fond of rum, though the dark chocolate is YUMMY... and since it's truly an indulgence (diabetic LOL) I try to make it last as long as possible... it's something to be savored, and not allowed to take control. It's difficult, I know... headstrong little beasties! LOL

If you are interested in making them last, you might want to try packaging them up in individual snack size baggies, and popping them in the freezer. I do that with the plain chocolates, and sometimes I'll even let them thaw before I eat them! LOL

In your case, the alcohol content will most likely keep them from freezing... but it's a nice place for storage, and they won't melt on you! LOL

    Savor... Enjoy... live!
Life is a gift, after all...
