I have tried to find justification and relevance for writing this blog to our general health and weight loss issues. So, I went online to make sure that I could justify sharing my story: "Research has shown health benefits of laughter ranging from strengthening the immune system to REDUCE FOOD CRAVINGS. . . . . ., among other things."

With this in mind, I thought it would be fun to share a couple of stories about my new cat, Elton. I have never owned a cat before, always dogs. My father was not a cat lover and neither was my husband. Now that I am on my own, I decided to get a cat. I wasn’t quite up to speed on the day to day life and antics of a cat, but I have been finding out there are many. Some I find endearing, others, not so much!

The other evening, while I was stretched out on the couch watching a bit of TV, I heard what sounded like the raging hooves of a stampede coming my way. It was Elton! He streaked before my eyes, leaped on the table in the corner, put on his brakes, skidded across it and smashed his head into the wall and fell off. I laughed so hard that I almost peed myself…..and mind you, I was all alone!

The next evening I was filling the dishwasher, turning my back now and again to gather dishes. Evidently I missed the part when Elton decided to explore the dishwasher more closely and I shut the dishwasher door. As I was wiping off the counters I heard a muffled meow. I looked around and listened again. It was coming from the dishwasher! I opened the door and out marched Elton. It was a good thing that I wasn’t planning on running the dishwasher AND that I stayed in the kitchen long enough to hear his plea! I laughed all the way to the telephone to share a laugh with my daughter.

So the real reason behind this story is to share my ignorance regarding cat behavior and how I am learning that Elton is bound to make me laugh on a regular basis. This is a good thing for me! I could use some more laughter in my life, but then who couldn’t?!

This is a staged picture of what happens at my house when loading the dishwasher.

I am a cat lover so appreciate this story. Was Elton able to move with you when you married or does he have a new home now? Most cats don't like to travel. My cat does not like the car drive 15 minutes to the vet and lets me know it LOUD and clear.

that is FABULOUS! when my 10 year old cat did the streaking to/from, DH and I found out it was due to diabetes and she wasn't supposed to be doing that at her age. it was still hilarious. :)

I've got 4 and they are a constant stream of craziness. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Cats are hilarious, if you just take the time to learn their personalities! One of my cats likes to "fetch" slippers -- every morning he brings them out to the living room, and at night he takes them back to the bedroom. He's done this for years! Pets are such a joy emoticon

Make sure you don't leave your washer open. Jake jumped in mine one day and the lid shut - of course I wasn't in the basement. He was lucky I decided to do a load of laundry that day. Imagine my surprise when i opened the washer and he jumped out. He was quite upset with me!

I love pets, we no longer have a cat, but we enjoy our neighbor's cats who come and sit in front of our picture windows in the living room, driving our two little dogs crazy! The cats stretched, looked over their shoulder to see if our dogs are watching and that yes, the front door is closed and then they continue to tease the heck out of our dogs. LOL Love it, it is so funny! Now, while we are going through this healthy struggle with my husband our two dogs are providing us with such comfort and they do give us their share of laughter, love. comfort and joy!

Oh my please share all Elton escapades with us I too could quite use the laughter .You saved me from snacking on an errant piece of plum pudding fudge that had escaped the children and the dog's watchful eyes it could have meant a serious setback after my hard earned 6 pound weight loss this week so consider you blog a community service!!!!

Cats can be so funny, and so different from dogs. I'm glad you have a character to enjoy. I had a cat years ago that enjoyed riding on the hood of our car when we backed out of the driveway. Then he would hop off, and let us go on our merry way. I think about my "Bud" everyday!

We always called it "the zooms" when the cat took off running around the house. Get some catnip and you will have some laughs at a parnoid cat.

Hilarious! I knew of a cat that got into a dryer once, but never a dishwasher! Lol! Oh, and the story that you told of Elton jumping around and hitting his head was hilarious! My cat (who is over 10 yrs old now), STILL flips around and chases her tail & her shadow, and she loves wrapping paper & bows, and well, YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE YOUR KITTY so much! I am so happy that you have a new friend in Him! Awesome. PS, my hubby doesn't love cats either, but she came w/ the package (marriage) 10 yrs ago. lol.

All of your comments are enlightening/funny! Everyone who has a pet seems to have some cool stories and I am loving hearing yours. I will always check dishwashers, dryers and hidy-holes that my dear Elton may want to investigate.

Thanks, Animal lovers and friends!

So funny! I had to read a blog about cats that I found in the Spaniel team list! lol! I wouldn't mind having a cat but my aussies are not cat friendly. My mom has a cat that likes to play the chase the light game....only she shines it on the ceiling and then laughs hysterically watching him jump up to try and get it!

My first pet was a brain damaged (we think) cat named Katie. It was so funny when she would do uncoordinated things like you described, because she would look all embarrassed and defensive afterward, as if to say, "What? You must have imagined that. It certainly wasn't me. I don't know what you are talking about." Just a warning: Cats are very quiet and sneaky and love "hiding places". My friend lost a cat in a situation similar to the dishwasher. I won't share the details, but check your cat's whereabouts before starting up any machinery that could contain a cat.

I think you fill find much laughter with Eaton. Beware of dryers too. I've had cats crawl into them, usually with warm dry laundry I'm trying to hang up, not cold wet laundry.

I can just see him skidding across the table. Our guys do that going around the corner in the kitchen. I've seen the one run into the wall more than once. He's not the brightest crayon in the box but he's one of the funniest and sweetest.

Have fun with your learning curve on cat behavior. They keep you guessing.

Ha! They are indeed funny critters. I'm also someone who never really knew cats - until I started dating my husband that is and was introduced to his kitty. Now I've been living with her for 4yrs and she continues to crack me up. She woke me in the middle of the night last night by jumping into bed right where my face was and colliding w/ it - kinda rude but also made me giggle!

LOL!! My cats have never gotten into the dishwasher although they are always curious. The one thing I do check every time I use it is the dryer. They love to jump in and take a nap if I leave the door open for any amount of time. Heads up for that one...since you have new ones, and yes, they will keep you laughing with their crazy antics!
