Found out what 278.00 means

Thursday, January 06, 2011

Obesity. That's what medical code 278.00 means as a diagnosis. Since my gynecologist can't perform an exam without inflicting pain on me, she sent me for an ultrasound. When I called to make the appointment the lady asked me for the reason, before I could say she asked me for the code where it says "Dx"; I gave it to her and said, "whatever that means", and the lady mentioned I could Google it. (you really can find out anything with Google, how about that). I was livid to find out it means "obesity". What does that have to do with it? I know my height and weight put me in that category, but does it really need to be put in just because there was no other number to put there? I guess there was no number for "The doctor ran out of patience". Everyone needs to be labeled, I guess.

Oh, Casbar911, I really thought I was just being paranoid for even bothering to look the codes up, but I like to know everything, and also double-check that it is correct. I even asked to check through my file the other day, and in the past I've had to fight them (was actually told once that I couldn't see my file because of privacy laws!), so I never really got to. The other day I got a little bit of a fight from one person, but when I asked the doctor, he said "sure go ahead, it's yours". Before he gave it to me, HE caught a mistake; he was looking puzzled and spending a long time going through the file and then said to me, "You never had staples, did you?" Nope! Someone else's info in my file, WITH my name on it. Argh! Maybe that is why they don't want us to see it! Checking all files at all doctors from now on. emoticon

Not to mention the other doctor who labeled me with "hypertension" for one reading that he said was OK, when I SPECIFICALLY asked him. I'll have him to thank when my insurance premiums go up. I am currently waiting to hear from him and plan to have that removed from my record. Do these doctors think that we are not going to look at any of the paperwork?
