The importance of balanced eating

Monday, January 03, 2011

I was reading a blog this morning by Susieph1 – and thought it was a timely reminder of the need to ensure ones own food Tracker is balanced

I think many people track their food – but they just enter what they have eaten that day – no thought of balance or planning – after all it takes time that people seem to resent to enter the foods!!

I wonder how many people actually plan their days meals in advance – and check that they stay within their calorie range – but also that their macro-nutrients (the carbs, protein and fats) are balanced,
Only by doing this can you be sure you are eating a balanced menu – and getting all the nutrients that you need and none in excess to the detriment of others.
I am sure, from reading other people’s pages round the SP site, the main reason people have problems with weight loss is that many people eat below their calorie range or well above, but also that they eat an unbalanced menu – heavy on carbs, or fats and light on protein maybe, or heavy in fats and protein and fats and light on carbs.

After you have finished tracking the days meals – go to the top of the page under the “add a food” button – there is a bar “I have finished tracking” – click this and it will take you to a very good breakdown of your days diet – and at the bottom – a pie graph that shows the precent of the macro nutrients in the days menu!!
The result might surprise you!!

Try to get a balance – it matters not what type of diet you are eating – there should still be a balance in some form!! I am sure it will help with your weight loss – it will certainly help you to be healthy and full of energy. The time sent is well worthwhile!!

One of my favorite things about the spark food trackers is that you can click on the link to show you what your progress is for the day. It shows you all the nutritional info including a PIE CHART at the bottom that shows where you are compared to where you NEED to be with your carbs/proteins/fats. My personal trainer wants mine to read differently than what Spark People suggests and FOR NOW I am trying to stick with his recommendations... but for the most part I watch what I eat and do my best to stay in the range both with my calories as well as my percentages. You're right... a lot of folks don't seem to care but WORSE is the huge amount of folks that don't even track and then wonder why they are not losing weight. Love ya, Dawn emoticon

That is a good reminder Ann. Thanks. I do find it difficult to stay with 3 oz. of meat. The 5 veggies is easier, but then I don't do well with fruits. Some day we will get it together! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I'm trying to become more mindful of this. Just within the last couple weeks i'm eating more protein and less starchy carbs and no wheat whatsoever. Next will be attention to micronutrients because I agree those are very important.

I think they are very wise words. I will take onboard the do the whole day so I can balance out. I tend to add each meal and then sometimes come tea time I have run out of calories so will get back on track again.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

You get points for pushing the finished tracking button too! Because I don't eat bread and try to avoid processed foods, I am usually under the recommended carbs - but I don't mind so long as I am close to 135 (their recommended absolute minimum lol)... know any good low cal high carb snacks? The biggest eye opener for me was fats. I do much better with them now!

That is the way we should do it but I am happy if i just keep an accurate number for my calories.

This is quite correct. I discovered right at the start that my problem was an unbalanced food intake ( too high in carbs and too low in protein).

And the added energy from a properly balanced diet is a real wake up call!

Thanks for the blog, Ann.
