So I'm a device nerd. I have had a version of the Garmin Forerunner since they first came out.
I find it motivating to see how far I've gone, and get an estimate of how many calories I have burned. I ordered the 405CX on New Year's Eve, and I'm looking forward to seeing whether the heartrate-based calculations are more accurate.
I don't always wear the Garmin when I'm riding my bike - sometimes I forget or it's not charged - and sometimes due to where I live it can't get a GPS signal and it doesn't pick up the GPS until well into the ride e.g. this morning it only got 1.9km of a 12.5km ride. (For those of you considering the Garmin, it will eventually pick up the GPS signal if you wait/stand still, but sometimes I'm too lazy - or late - to wait.)
Anyway, I just looked at my stats for last year and they were:
Commuting: 4,425 km
Fun: 838 km
Total: 5,263 km
Since that underestimates given that I don't use the watch all of the time, and my goal was 5,000 for the year, that's pretty good!
In 2009 I did 3,713 km and in 2008 2,114 km, so I like the trend, a lot.
This year I'd like to bump up the "fun" km to at least 1,000. The commuting will stay about the same. If I biked every single day to work, excluding holidays and vacation time, it would be 5,500, so I'm at 80%, which is pretty good considering that there are some days that aren't bikeable due to weather and I travel a fair bit for work.
Bring on 2011!
