Bike Tales #11: Why Don't You Get Some Pants On

Saturday, January 01, 2011

Like many of my blogs, this one has a lesson to learn: you will rue the day that you made fun of your Spark Team Leader.

To the story, we are in Ohio, it is January, it should be cold, it is not. I am focused on rearranging the furniture and cleaning the bedrooms, so that I can turn one of them into an office. But, presto, the sun comes out, and I become a madman, wanting to go bike riding. So, I get down a bike and change into bike clothes. I start with a muscle shirt and spandex shorts, but what next?

Diverting a little, just before Christmas, JMERLAU, Spark Team Leader extraordinaire, posted this message:

Very cryptic, but TODDJAMES deciphered it: (to the turn of Xmas Tree)
Oh Running Man
Oh Running Man
Why don't you put some pants on!

(to which I added) His legs are trim: he goes without!
When he goes out, his team all shout:

Oh Running Man
Oh Running Man
Why don't you put some pants on!

Anyway, back to today, I figure that I need something over the shirt, so I put on a light windbreaker. I get down a pair of jogging pants, but I think, "these will be a pain to keep away from the chain, it's warm out, just look at the sun!" So, I forget the pants, and complete the outfit with a pair of wool socks and my everyday Merril gym shoes. Fortunately, I also put on a head scarf around my ears, under my helmet, and a pair of bike winter mittens. As I am leaving, I'm thinking that it is colder than I thought (not to mention the 11 mph wind). About 5 miles out, this song came to me (again to the tune of O Xmas Tree):

Oh Biking Man,
Oh Biking Man,
Why don't you get some pants on!

The sun is out, but it's not warm.
The wind is strong, you should be warned:

Oh Biking Man,
Oh Biking Man,
Why don't you get some pants on!

Anyway, I survived the 14 miles, then showered until we ran out of hot water.

Too funny. I got the visual of this, both on the bike and you shivering in the shower... OUCH! Mind over matter persevered, or was your brain frozen even with the scarf and headgear?

I was dressed in three layers to go for a walk in AZ, today, so I can't imagine how cold you must have been! Good for you for getting the exercise, and I hope you have warmed up again by now!
