Starting over.

I had a major setback in November when I injured my hip. I have now gained 11 pounds since then. This injury was a major blow to my normal routine. I went from exercising 3 to 5 hours a day to being able to do almost nothing. I could not walk for almost a week. Talk about a blow to the exercise momentum. My body didn't recognize the change in activity very quickly. I had a very hard time not wanting to consume my normal amount of calories that I was used to when I was doing all that exercising.

Being January 1, I weighed myself to see how bad it was. I knew it was bad because I could feel I gained weight. I was not expecting to see the scale jump from 131 to 142 however. So I figure it is a new year and perfect time to start over.

Today I went in and reset all my Sparkpeople goals. I am at least able to do exercise now. I am not yet ready for the intensity I was used to but I can get back at it. I am hoping to be released to normal activity from my doctor on Tuesday so I can start working my way back to where I was.

I am back to tracking all the my calories again. I admit when I was walking 5 hours a day I didn't track my calories because of all the calories I was burning. This is one habit I need to get back to.

I am getting back to exercising every day again. I will hopefully get a couple days a week walking 5 hours and then vow to get in at least 3 hours of some kind of physical activity the rest of the days. My husband got me several new Wii games that will help me with this. I got WIO, Just Dance, Just Dance 2, GG Cardio Dance, and Wii Yoga. I also just ordered Biggest Loser Power Walk DVD. When my leg is stronger I plan on restarting the C25K program. I am just not ready physically to start running again, but soon I hope.

When I am cleared I will also get back in to some strength training. I have been really limited here. It is amazing how the tendon I strained is connected to almost every movement my body makes. My physical therapist said absolutely not intense strength training. I am limited right now to knee raises. I can't believe I am looking forward to getting back to lunges and squats.

I am almost making it a personal goal to participate in more Sparkpeople challenges, especially those in the team I help run. I got away from challenges when I was getting so much exercise in, I didn't think I needed the challenges. I know now that I do and look forward to getting back into the swing of things.

The one thing that has been constant throughout is consuming my needed water. It is amazing how my body is so used to it, it craves water if I am not getting enough. I have been lazy in tracking it however.

I welcome all my Sparkfriends to keep an eye on me to make sure I am not getting lazy again and keep with this. I know it is possible based on where I have been. I have great support here and am ready to tackle achieving my goals.

    Hi Amy - You have a great plan to start out the new year. I know you can do it! You got a great group of workout games to give you good variety. Just be sure you don't overdo of course.

I know how hard it is to bounce back from injuries
I broke both arms at the same time 6 years ago and gained back all the wt. I had lost (56 pounds YIKES)
Listen to your therapist and don't rush yourself..
but hang in there you can do it
