A not-so-nice adventure

Thursday, December 30, 2010

DH and I were walking to La Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudi's unfinished cathedral (which is fabulous and wild and crazy and it kind of morphs from classic Gothic cathedral to Gaudi's undulating organic lines, all in one building) - anyhow, we were walking along and all of a sudden we felt something splatter us on our backs - we looked at each other and it was some yellow goo, and some man came up and motioned that some bird or something from the building dripped on us, and he said come on, I have water - I had read about pickpockets who do this, they splatter you with this stuff and in cleaning you off they take your wallets or whatever - so I turned on him and said NO NO NO and he quickly turned and walked off - DH said I very effectively told him "F you". So we walked over to a bar, walked in, I said in my horrible Spanish "A man" - turned and showed the bartender my back all splattered - then said "bathroom?" and he pointed us on our way. DH and I must have spent at least 20 minutes in there, cleaning each other up with water and paper towels - our jeans, our jackets, our scarves, my hair - ugh!!!!!! Plus it was one of those automatic lights that stays on for only a few minutes, so we had to keep re-hitting the light so we could see what we were doing. When we came out, both the cleaning lady and the woman owner of the bar asked if we lost money or wallets, we said no, we were okay - they were very nice about it. But it put quite a damper on the day. (Everything else was fine, although we didn't have a great lunch, and I have a blister on my foot, but we managed to walk over 20,000 steps, so that was a good day.)

Anyhow, that was our day.

    LOL! That and speaking English!

I still have ghosts of the stains on my black jacket! Now it has to go to the cleaners - ugh! Talk about crime!

What an experience! You are lucky you read about these things happening and were prepared. I was in Barcelona a couple of years ago and at the very same spot but luckily nothing happened.

I'm so sorry this happened. You handled yourself so well. It's certainly an example of there being good (the pickpocket) and bad (the bar owner) everywhere.

20,000 steps - you go girl.

Hope the rest of the trip is a wee bit less exciting.

Uch! How disgusting and awful. I would have run after that creep and kicked him where it hurts! Okay, not really, but you guys made the right decision.

What a terrible thing to do in the shelter of Sagrada Familia: just think what Gaudi would have said about that!!

Trust me, this amount of goo would NOT come from one bird - unless there were still pterodactyls!!!!

We're in Barcelona - I had read about this both online and in a tour book, so knew what had happened.

I was ready to punch the guy!

Yes, we have heard of this in Europe also... very happy you both are fine, considering the horrible experience. Where abouts were you exactly? We traveled lots in Germany and Bayswater England... love seeing old things..

Have a Happy New Year!
