Baby Steps

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

I'm learning to appreciate baby steps. Every little change snowballs into a huge effect. My sister weighs a good bit less than me. In fact, she's in the lovely 130-140 range. However, she isn't fit, and she used to be as big as me, so she complains about being flabby. On the other hand, I have a friend of mine who weighs a good bit more than me, weighing it at around 350, and isn't happy with it. She's finally ready to make a change and be healthier, but getting either of them to get off the couch is a piece of work. And I have enough trouble convincing myself to! How can I expect to encourage them if I can't get myself to do it?

Well today - I'm proud to say - I managed to get all three of us to take a short walk (actually, convincing them was a way of convincing myself!) We only went to the end of the street, which, sadly, is only five houses away, but it's a huge step considering before we never would have left the house.

Instead of getting down about how far we didn't walk, I'm trying think of it as how far we *did* walk. And you know what? It feels great! We stepped out of the house, and even though it was a pain getting out there, we did it, and we didn't keel over. So my plan is to get us to do that every day we're together (and we see each other pretty frequently) and step at a time get us to walk as far as the community tennis courts, and then maybe as far as the post office, and maybe Kroger eventually! Hah, and maybe then we can start *using* the tennis courts! I mean really, they're right there! And the park is just the opposite direction. Really, we're in an ideal location. It would be a waste to stay in all day every day.

And I figured out another trick. My friend and I are huge gamers. Well, I finally got a hand-held gaming device (whoot Nintendo DS!) and she finally got herself an ipod touch - so, when we get back to school for spring semester, we plan on walking the fitness trail every day while playing our games. That way, we can get in our fitness AND our gaming! This has been an exciting day ^_^
