Adventures in bodybugging, days 1 and 2

I'm mostly going to let the pictures speak for themselves. Other than that, here are some things I have learned!

1. sitting at a desk only burns about as much as sleeping (about 1.5 calories a minute). As soon as I stand up and start casually walking around, I can burn twice as many calories a minute.

2. I don't burn as many calories during rigorous exercise as I thought I did. During the high peaks you can see below, I was on the elliptical machine and working my ass off. Only burning about 7.5 calories a minute, whereas Spark and the machine say about 10 cals a minute.

3. During weight lifting, I burn about 6.5 calories a minute. Nice!

4. Walking burns almost as many calories as vigorous exercise! Amazing. About 6 calories a minute for brisk walking.

5. Playing video games burns 2.5 calories a minute, vs. 1.8 calories just sitting around. HA! HA!

    Wooo cool, I am interested in buying the body media, gowearfit thing. Do you find it bulky to wear under your clothes. I was wondering if it would fit under my work clothes....Kestrie made me laugh and my husband wants to know how many calories sex burns too!!!!

    Wow that is so cool! Was it uncomfortable sleeping in it? I have an ipod and I bought an arm band with it, but I never use it because I don't like how it feels and it's hard to reach the ipod to change the songs (which I do ALL the time). I usually just carry it with me when doing cardio but when it comes to lifting weights it gets pretty tricky. But the arm band is pretty big and bulky so maybe the BB wouldn't be as bad. Keep us updated on it. I'd love to learn more before I buy one since it is really expensive. It seems so cool though! Thanks for sharing and congrats on finding a fun new toy!!

    I actually log all my food in SP, then go their site and put in the final numbers. Their food tracking thing isn't great.

Yes, I did sleep with it on! I take it off to take a shower and upload the data to the site! Don't want to miss any calories, lol.

It doesn't measure heart rate. It uses other things like body temperature to determine how many calories you're burning. Maybe a future one will, that would be awesome.

Does it monitor your heart rate and blood pressure? Did you sleep with it on? So fancy!! And I'm really happy that this little critter is keeping you motivated! emoticon

    Oh, yeah - Jessica, I think that's so true, because if you look at my evening numbers, I tend to continue burning more calories on average after that 1 hour of exercise until I go to bed! Pretty cool, huh!

    I don't really think of either of them as being "correct" or "incorrect". However, I do think some people burn more calories than they think they are. The research out on the bodybugg says it is 90% accurate compared to calorie expenditure measured in a clinical setting. In any case, I'm in experimental mode right now, but I can already see that even with eating such a high amount of calories, the scale is already moving, and therefore I conclude that when I go by the numbers SP gives me, I'm not eating enough for my actual activity level.

    OMG, this just cool! You can do all of this with a bodybugg. I am so going to have to get me one for XMAS or maybe after XMAS! I knew strength training was better than vigorous exercise and plus when you strength train you body continues to burn the calories from that up to 48 hours post workout vs cardio. Calories burned from cardio only affect the body right when they are burned. So this is way to cool.

    So these are results from your BodyBugg? I guess the questions that always come up when you're comparing two different 'products' (in this case BB & SP) is Which One is Correct? The difficulty seems to be in how to make that decision. Regardless, I think of both as Tools, like my scale. If I use the same one most of the time, then I have a consistent measure of my progress. If I use my scales & then the ones at the gym & get different readings on each, I can get frustrated, thinking that I'm yo-yoing up & down.

The long & the short of it, in my opinion, is that the Tools help to make you more aware of your activity levels & what works better for you. Regardless of which Tool you're using, Walking is better than sitting on the couch. But you already knew that. emoticon emoticon
