Few people have seen me trying to put on my shoes, at first it was an embarrassing sight but I got used to it.
After my back surgery in 2004 the pain from my ruptured discs was gone but there was some nerve compression in my lumbar spine. My leg almost constantly tingled and I took to wearing compression knee high stockings to reduce the sensation. I often had pain in my leg and my big toe.
I started to swim daily and then after the old Y closed I started walking instead. I tried to walk daily and the leg had become a lot better. The one thing that remained as problematic was putting on my left shoe, sneaker or boot. As soon as I lifted my leg from the ground I lost any control over it. I would try to put the foot in the shoe but it was very hard to get it there. At first DH would have to help me put on my shoe. As my back became flexible again I was able to bend and literally guide it in to the footwear with my hand. I took to using shoes with Velcro fasteners they gave me plenty of room to get my foot in.
That was until yesterday. I went to an acupuncturist. I went in with pain and left almost pain free. This morning my back was stiff but still less painful than it had been. I got out of bed and went to put on my slippers. As I lifted my leg and bent down to grab my normally wayward foot, I was amazed at how steady it was. I was able to slip my foot in to the slipper on the first try. I called to DH to come see what I could do.
I took off my slippers and he watched in amazement as I put my slipper on successfully several times and then we both laughed out load and he hugged me.
I cannot wait to see if this is all going to be a permanent improvement for me. I sure do hope it is. My back is sore, not as sore but I did do my 3.25 miles walk.
The first 1.5 miles we walked the trail till it became too icy so we turned back at the 0.75 mile marker for a total of 1.5 miles on the trail.
After dinner I watched a kid’s movie as I walked on the treadmill 1.75 miles.
