DAY Seven of my Spark Streak. Unexpected results.

Thursday, December 09, 2010

Few people have seen me trying to put on my shoes, at first it was an embarrassing sight but I got used to it.
After my back surgery in 2004 the pain from my ruptured discs was gone but there was some nerve compression in my lumbar spine. My leg almost constantly tingled and I took to wearing compression knee high stockings to reduce the sensation. I often had pain in my leg and my big toe.

I started to swim daily and then after the old Y closed I started walking instead. I tried to walk daily and the leg had become a lot better. The one thing that remained as problematic was putting on my left shoe, sneaker or boot. As soon as I lifted my leg from the ground I lost any control over it. I would try to put the foot in the shoe but it was very hard to get it there. At first DH would have to help me put on my shoe. As my back became flexible again I was able to bend and literally guide it in to the footwear with my hand. I took to using shoes with Velcro fasteners they gave me plenty of room to get my foot in.

That was until yesterday. I went to an acupuncturist. I went in with pain and left almost pain free. This morning my back was stiff but still less painful than it had been. I got out of bed and went to put on my slippers. As I lifted my leg and bent down to grab my normally wayward foot, I was amazed at how steady it was. I was able to slip my foot in to the slipper on the first try. I called to DH to come see what I could do.
I took off my slippers and he watched in amazement as I put my slipper on successfully several times and then we both laughed out load and he hugged me.

I cannot wait to see if this is all going to be a permanent improvement for me. I sure do hope it is. My back is sore, not as sore but I did do my 3.25 miles walk.

The first 1.5 miles we walked the trail till it became too icy so we turned back at the 0.75 mile marker for a total of 1.5 miles on the trail.

After dinner I watched a kid’s movie as I walked on the treadmill 1.75 miles.

Spark Streak Day 7
3.25 miles today
12,537 steps total.

Great to hear, I hope it stays around long term....I'm off to my massage tomorrow, but I know the effects don't last nearly as long as I'd like.... have a great weekend and keep up the streaks...

That is just awesome news. I am trying to find an acupuncturist locally as I do think it would help me. I will keep you posted.

I overdid it yesterday cleaning my sunroom and my back and legs really hurt last night. The good part - sunroom all clean (including the windows) and the yellow ribbon tree is up waiting to great my soldier boy on Sunday.

I am so happy for you, my friend.

Sunny

emoticon So proud of you! I just may go and try out an acupuncturist! Sounds amazing. I go to the chiropractor today and I hope he can help me like he usually does. But, for some reason I am having problems with the heel/ankle area on the right foot. Hope it isn't serious and requires something else. My chiropractor is amazing- he can manipulate even my feet-so here's hoping that is all I need. If not will look into acupuncture. Really happy for you Pat! Keep walking!!

There's not much better than getting relief from pain and being able to do things independently again. Keep up the great work. Working through your pain is motivating.

This is good news! It is wonderful to see measurable results from that acupuncture. The doctor sure seems like he knew what to do to help you. I hope you can continue with treatment and see continued improvement. Sometimes it is worth the risk or fear of these alternative treatments as they have helped many people. It looked strange to me at first but positive feedback from patients has shown it works for many people. So glad you decided to go to him and hoping that this will make a difference in how you feel from now on!!Sending positive thoughts that this is so.
