My boobs are too big for yoga...

Wednesday, December 08, 2010

Honestly, they are!

Went to a vinyassa yoga tonight and I had a hard time with the moves because my boobage kept getting in the way. I was surprised that I had so much trouble doing the moves because I had on my good quality sports bra that usually keeps me padded down. Maybe all the bending and moving got the girls upset and they tried to bust out. Sure glad they didn't. Would've been nipplegate all over again...

But in all seriousness, for the busty spark babes, does your boobage get in the way while doing yoga? I really would like to stick with the exercises because I love the breathing techniques and I am absolutely positive that it will help me build my upper body strength because my shoulders were screaming during the class. Good scream, not bad scream. But if I can't get a handle on these boobs, I might have to find another alternative...

Major news of this week was the wellness coach at my job said I lost 4 lbs of fat and gained 4.5 lbs of muscle. I'm stoked about this since muscle looks ohh so much better than fat, plus it'll help me burn more calories while I'm resting. I was pumping some major iron this week.

Yup, I'm proud of myself. emoticon

LOL!! I With DDDs myself, I can totally relate! However, the advice given already is what I would say, too - just concentrate on doing the best you can. Not every body is built to do every posture, but your boobs won't prevent you from doing most of the poses. And in a Vinyasa class, everyone is definitely too busy to worry about them looking at you.

I love yoga--glad you are enjoying it too.

You know I relate to the boobage question! When I first started yoga, I had my boobs AND belly totally in the way. But I went with it. To me, one of the best benefits of yoga is helping you see and grow comfortable in the contours of your body (even the parts that are majorly in the way) to build towards acceptance and to learn how to honor, respect, and be at peace with the way it is at the present moment. Since attempting to lose weight or be in better shape means you're asking your body to constantly change, I found this to be a good balance to the process. Let them be in the way! Notice it, accept it, love it.

That's just my two cents. ;-)

I admit that I hate bras, and I have been known to go braless even when exercising at home by myself. So I swing, bam and plop. emoticon

as CARMINACG said... get a good fit on the top, either as a sports bra, or as a tank, and you'll be good... They're there to stay... And, if you do have an escapee.. no worries.. just tuck back where they belong, and keep up! Everone else is focused on their own form, and shouldn't notice.. but your instructor might get a giggle... ;-)

I am a two sports bras kind of girl. I have always wore two for the "just in case" moments. Good luck with the boobage!

The worst for me is when I have to lean over my front leg and put my hands on the ground, they get in the way and don't let me get as far down as I would like, but the price you pay for nice boobage ;) :P

Yes, the boobs do get in the way. So does my hang over gut. I don't wear a compressing bra, or an underwire bra during yoga, but just a regular old bra. When I move into a pose, I just lift any extra flesh into a more comfortable position (whatever, where ever the flesh may be). If you want more specific info, if that doesn't make sense, just sparkmail me (don't want to get too graphic in the comments here.)

Way to go on the muscle gain!

Hey I had the same problem when I first started - I made the mistake of wearing 1 or more sport bra's with a top thinking if I strap things down really tight I wont have a problem. However it was the opposite!

Then I invested in a top from Luluemon (one that had ample support where I didnt have to wear another sport bra underneath) I looked for one that would allow a good range of motion with my sholders with a criss cross back and was high enough in the frount that when I bent all the way over there was no chance of anything going out.

Once you find the proper top, they wont seem so 'in the way!' Good Luck!

YES mine do. my yoga instructor here (in Korea, where they're all half my body size and 1/10th my boob size--for real) always tries to push my body down and if I spoke Korean... I'd tell here those girls aren't going anywhere!
as long as you keep them compressed so they're not impairing you (from jiggling) then your'e ok. I mean, your body is your body and yoga is all about being the best YOU possible, not competing w/ others. :)

Just like everything else that's more difficult because of big boobage, you'll find a way to complete the moves without them getting into the way too much.

When I was chubbier doing yoga, I noticed my tummy getting in the way more than my oversized chest. Hmm. Have fun!!

I, too, have issues w/ my breasts getting in the way, but it is usually just with floor stretches such as the cobbler's pose. My best advice is to double your bra coverage: First layer bra being an excellent sports bra, and on top of it a regular t-back sports bra to keep any spillage covered (or a t-back tank). You still can find your balance even with big boobs, you just have to be patient with them and know they have a mind of their own sometimes. Good luck! emoticon

Way to go, hon! That's awesome news! I can't say that I've ever had issues with my girls... I've never been very big up top and since losing all this weight, they are even smaller! The hubs is concerned that I'll have nothing left by mosquito bites by the time I hit goal. LOL What a guy....

well... I wish I could offer some advice, but my boobs have never been "too big" for anything. LOL The lord blessed me with lots of hips and azz... but no boobies. I always joke and say that I got my mom's hips and my dad's chest. My mom was a DD...

I'm super happy to hear about your fat loss and muscle gain!

Yes! It totally does. I started out a 42DD and it made any pose with a twist in it so hard! But it does get better the longer you keep at it, you keep finding modifications that'll accommodate the girls.

LOL I started out a 38DD and had particular trouble with revolved side angle (I'd lose balance on Big-Bertha's side)! I'm finding that I still compensate for boobage I no longer have (i.e. putting my body into poses in ways that will accomodate). All I can say is you're not alone, girl!

Thanks for sharing :D

I'm a 34F and I find it difficult to do quite a few yoga poses, even with my awesome I-swear-by-it sports bra. So, don't feel bad. Besides, there are a lot of other reasons why a person might have trouble doing yoga and if the worst of your worries are large boobs, then I think you're set!

Congratulations on the muscle gain! I have to admit that I laughed when I read the title. I too have had my boobs, and stomach, and even my flabby thighs get in the way of certain yoga moves. I figure that, as I lose weight and get muscle, the boobies will shrink. Perhaps that will happen in your case as well?

I definitely feel your pain! I just make sure that I have the best, most supportive sports bra possible and if I need to modify a bit to keep from knocking myself out cold, I just do it. Congrats on your progress this week, that's really amazing!

Yes I've had that problem. What I ended up doing (I'm a 38D/DD ish) I wore a very good sports bra and then got a yoga top that sucks me in (high neck) and it helped a tad more. but the shirt rode up...

I know your pain. Tell me if you figure out a way to fix this problem

Love this blog! This is absolutely awesome! I don't usually have problems doing the moves themselves, unless it's bending to touch something, and the girls (or my gut) get in the way. I wish I had some brilliant advice, but all I can think of is an Ace Bandage to wrap 'em down and keep 'em still! Good luck and thanks for sharing!

The boobies can be a hinderance at times! Try sticking with the class a little see what happens! If all fails... try a different type of yoga! Good luck!
