A Gift - Our Family and Food
We received a Christmas gift in the mail today - a family cookbook - from my sister-in-law who lives on the Big Island of Hawaii. She is my husband’s youngest sister and is a writer by profession.
She had asked all of the family to submit our favorite family recipes to her this past year, as she planned on compiling them into book. The original idea was to create a family cookbook to present to the nieces and nephews when they got married. Since this adventure started, we have had 3 get married – before the book was completed.
Food Memories – Recipes and Recollections from Our Family Kitchens
The following is from the first page of the book...written by my sister-in-law, Peg.
Food has played an important role in all our lives from the very beginning. Being raised on a farm by parents who spent most of their lives producing food, it was at the heart of who we were as a family.
But growing and making food for our family was something Mom and Dad loved to do most of all. And they shared that love with us. Nearly all our family gatherings were organized around the meals we shared. From these meals came wonderful flavors, memorable smells and many very full bellies.
Our yearly themed Christmas Eve dinners inspired culinary adventure and experiments. Whether good or bad (most were very good), we enjoyed being able to share something new.
From our early years, Mom was the one who inspired that cooking curiosity. She was always trying new dishes, reading magazines, jotting down recipes from friends. She even concocted some of her own.
Her love of cooking, baking and enjoying food has clearly been passed down to all of us, as evidenced by this wonderful collection of recipes. Some go back generations, while others are more recent family favorites. And while we can’t get together as often as we used to, we can share great family memories and preserve that family bond by making all the great recipes within this book.
Cheers to Mom and Dad!
Now, to go make my self a cup of hot tea and sit back and read this treasure of family recipes and stories - cover to cover!
