Get Out Before You Gobble

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

OK, this is my Thanksgiving Day challenge to you guys...

I tend to make these holiday challenges fairly simple (remember the "no 17 Kit Kat" challenge?)

emoticon emoticonGet out before you gobble. emoticon emoticon

Do something before you feast on Thanksgiving. Go for a walk, run, bike ride, hike, touch football game, kickball game, ANYTHING. Just do something. Go for as long as you can and if it's just 30 minutes, that's OK.

Seriously, I just read the 500-calorie Thanksgiving SP article and laughed again. Last year I did the same thing. Seriously, 500 calories on Thanksgiving? I'm not saying you should gorge yourself, but, uh? 500 calories? On Thanksgiving?

Getting out and doing something will...

emoticon Get you out of the kitchen for awhile

emoticon Allow you to breathe the fresh air

emoticon Exercise your mind, body and spirit

emoticon Put you in the right frame of mind for the rest of the day

emoticon Give you some "me" time before the family demands your attention

emoticon Be a great healthy start to the day that will hopefully spark awesome choices for the rest of the day

emoticon Burn some calories that will be put back on in due course

And seriously, turkey is an awesome lean source of protein and sweet potatoes and other veg side dishes are terrific for you too. So if you focus on those and then dip into a little stuffing, mashed potatoes and dessert, then you'll be in terrific shape. Remember, the holidays will not break you!

Enjoy! He sure won't...

I went to the gym as soon as I woke up. After kitchen was cleaned and everyone went home I decided to take a brisk 3 mile walk. I felt so acomplished.

I did your challenge and it was great! I did a workout DVD first thing in the morning and then right before dinner I walked/jogged with the dog for 30 minutes. I ate before dinner so I wasn't hungry so I couldn't eat too much and couldn't go back for seconds. I must say, I did much better that I thought I would have!

I didn't go out, it was too ugly outside today. Instead, I stayed indoors and played Zumba Fitness for the Wii (just released this week.) It was fun and I was sweating!

Hope you had a great day!!

Happy Thanksgiving! I went out myself for a jog/walk, and it stared to snow! It was so lovely to be out, moving, experiencing the delightful nippyness of autumn, and to see the first flurries! Wasn't prepared clothes-wise (lol) but it did make me feel great.

Hope all my American sparkers have a lovely holiday/holiday weekend!

The alarm is set extra early, so while the food is in the oven, my daughter and I will get our workout first thing. THEN if it doesn't rain, we plan on taking a walk on the trail that's down the road. :) Have a great Thanksgiving!

Love your ideas. This year, at least 4 of my co-workers, three of our significant others, and two friends of my husbands are going for a six mile walk at 6:30 Am. We'll all be done well before we have to do anything about our holiday dinners. I'm very excited to know that around the country other sparkpeople will be trotting along on their very own Thanksgiving exercise activities! WE ROCK!!

We are going to a movie in the morning and we don't have a traditional thanksgiving meal. Its chicken or us with sweet potatoes, string beans, a veggie and fruit platter to munch on before dinner. For dessert I did the no bake pumpkin pie from sparkspeople recipes. I will sneak in a bike ride after the movie though for my daily exercise. Happy Thanksgiving and love the challenge.

I love this blog. My gym is doing early morning Zumba thursday, so I will be going to that. I also have a huge family so we have Thanksgiving at the community center. Once everything is cleaned up we play basketball.

I have your 17 kit-kat challenge in mind. I am only going to eat the good stuff. I don't want any turkey, I don't like pumpkin pie all that much, I have mashed potatoes all the time. However, I will be eating the struessel topped sweet potatoes, my new chocolate pie with oreo crust and stuffing with gravy. Worth it!

I usually do a 5K Turkey Trot in the morning, but this year, I plan to strike out for a run of my own to burn some serious calories. (300 calories for a 5K just ain't gonna cut it.)

I don't really care too much for most Thanksgiving foods, but my vice is appetizers, so I've challenged myself to cool it on those puppies!

Thank you for this post! I was just putting my recipes into the "RECIPE CALCULATOR" and kind of feeling 'blah' because of HOW many calories and fat are in our traditional recipes. Your post helped me put things in perspective! I think my plan is to make myself a sweet potato [sprinkle some cinnamon and stevia on for a 'special' treat] since I could eat these EVERY day and feel like it's a splurge! emoticon , but beyond that I'm going to just enjoy SMALL portions of my favorites and go for my 5 mile walk before we eat. It's all about portion control and moderate eating anyway! So I plan to do just that! Thank you for encouraging all of us!!!!!

emoticon HAPPY THANKSGIVING emoticon
