Fat VS Muscle (Picture)

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

Tell me if this has happened to you during your weight loss journey:

"I'm working out. I'm walking/running. I'm lifting weights and/or doing strength training. The scale stays the same, but my clothes feel looser!"

There's a reason. Five pounds of FAT is a larger VOLUME than five pounds of MUSCLE. Here's a picture:

Can you see it now? Put the five pounds of fat in your right butt cheek, and five pounds of muscle in your left butt cheek. The right side is going to be BIGGER than the left. They'll weigh the same.

Interesting, huh?

I've pretty much stopped looking at the scale and just concentrate on making my clothes fit better... whenever my mom asks if I am still losing I tell her "I don't know, but I do know I am down to a size 10 and I have lots of energy!"

Thanks for the eye-opening graphic image of the difference!!

My trainer has these models on her desk so we can see, feel and hold each - very effective!!

Thanks for the blog. It is a photo i have seen before, but it helps to think about how well the clothes fit when we get toned and lose that fat.

This is why the scale is not the only way to measure success!!! Although I have lost a lot of weight, seeing the clothes get baggy has also been a big motivator.
Good luck on your journey.

I have heard that muscle weighs more than fat and those pictures show it.
