It's the season to gain weight?

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

According to a article published recently , the average American will gain 10 pounds between Halloween and New Years. That is a scary report. But there is also a report that 67% , 2 out of 3 Americans is overweight or obese. What happens to us that allows this to happen. The good news is that if you are reading this, you have joined Spark to release weight and become healthy again. I have seen concern from some that they are afraid it will happen to them that they will gain weight at this time of the year.
I look back at my life, before I started my healthy journey and I can’t recall even thinking about gaining. Starting with Halloween ,eating as much candy as I could find , Thanksgiving Day, a day to enjoy family and have a huge meal. I can remember, loving food as I did, not eating well, I mean, not 1 serving, but 2 or 3 servings of every thing on the table including extra pie and other deserts, coming away from the table feeling so stuffed but happy. Of course, we had our big meal at noon and when the evening came along , more stuffing myself with more of everything. This was every year. As Christmas approached it was a time to bake our favorite cookies and who can eat just one cookie, everyday at work people would bring in special cookies and I love cookies. I wouldn’t have just one, I munched all day. Christmas day was also a special meal and of course I took advantage and over ate. There were also special parties with lots of food , there to be eaten. New Years is the same, parties, and more food. It is no wonder that I gained weight. After New Years, I vowed to go on a diet and that lasted a few weeks. So If the report is accurate, many people are and will be doing the same thing I did in the past.
Why I am writing this, I am saying to all of us that this does not have to happen. I will only speak for myself and tell you how it is for me. In 2007, I had started my program and in the “Season”, I released weight every week. I followed my plan, did not get off track and did not participate in eating all the goodies that was available. , 2008 & 2009 , I was in maintenance and again, I continued on a daily basis of eating healthy. I did have the traditional dinners, but limited the food to small portions and no seconds or thirds, I had desert, but a small portion. This year that we are in, will be no different, as I now say I am living life, I am going to do the same as in the past, eating with controls. I don’t feel a temptation that I would revert back to old habits.
Why am I writing this? I gave my example of how it was and how it is now and I want each person to know that you also can get through this season and continue to release weight. I feel there is no reason to gain weight. I have seen a number of blogs where there are plans being made to keep things under control. That is a great idea, another area to look at, is that I have seen people write that they went off track because of a special event , like a birthday or special night out and it frightens them that in this season it will happen again.
It certainly could, but it does not have to be that way. I suggest that a strong focus be made on our attitudes and what we really believe. This can be the time to put all that hard work that each of us has done and know that it is time that we take control of our lives, If you can vision the weigh-ins with a release of weight, feel what that number would be and get excited. I also feel at this time in our lives as we work towards a healthy weight or maintain what we have accomplished that we need to have a new excitement about our lives. A positive outlook, a knowing that finally we are in control and have the ability to face each special day and enjoy it with a new feeling. I love the idea that I can participate in the special days and meals knowing that I eat healthy.
My purpose is to tell you, that if I could release the 84 pounds and continue for almost 3 years now of maintaining it, that all of us here on Spark can do the same thing.
I believe that each person can be successful, but WILL they. Lets make this the year that we went through the “season” successfully.

Monty, I plan to loose weight this holiday season!! I happen to have a dr. appointment January 5th and I can't wait to see the look on his face when he sees how much weight I've lost! Thanks for the challenge. You are an inspiration! emoticon

    Hi Monty--

This is a great pledge! While my main purpose of joining SparkPeople was to lose just a little weight and make better food choices by tracking diet, and exercise efficiently and more often, I agree the holidays are typically a time of overindulgence. I find putting in extra time at the gym is crucial (and often harder with all the holiday commitments). Also, I don't deny myself -- I figure I only make apple pie a couple of times a year, I'm going to have one piece! I just don't use it as a reason to go crazy.

Best of luck to everyone! Let's make our New Year's resolutions to keep doing what we are right now! emoticon

Great blog!!! Last year I watched what I was eating but still gained, luckily it wasn't the 10 pounds but only 3 and lost that very quickly in the new year. Since I have been struggling to get back at it.
This year I will not gain weight!!!!

    Monty,

Yes, I will commit to NOT gaining during the coming holidays. And I thank you for including me in your efforts to get others to join you. You have been a nice friend and I always appreciate the encouraging remarks you make when I do something right!

Thanks and hope to be able to report at the first of the new year that I hung in there with you.

Count me in. If I have all the trimmings but in a moderate amount, I should not have any problems because I will continue with all of the exercise. This is very manageable. And, to be extra sure, I'm thinking of signing myself up for a 5K on New Year's Day so that I will have to stay the course over the holidays. I WILL NOT GAIN WEIGHT OVER CHRISTMAS. [Nice idea, Monty. Thanks for the challenge!]

But I don't have those excuses and fully intend to at least weigh no more on January 1, 2011 than I do today and even a few pounds less. emoticon

I've always in the past (until last year or so) gained over the holidays, I've done better the past couple of years, but intend to do even better this year and maintain my weight at least where it is.

Thanks for the blog... It was great!! And Congratulations to you for your weight loss also!! Betty emoticon

I will not fall into the negative messages that happen this time of year. I will make good choices and not let others talk me into "just one more."

I'm in too! Good blog. Difficult season with all the social/cultural food expectations. So odd that it can be so difficult for others to understand when you need to say NO or take just a small taste.

For some reason, it's hard for others to "get" it, that we want and need to take care ourselves. But I guess we educate them :).

Hi Monty, Thank you for sharing this wonderful blog with us. I have known you since January and at that time, you were already at Maintenence. You have maintained your weight for all the time that I know you. I did not know you when weight was a problem for you, but I do know that you will never put that weight back on because as you have told us, when you were on your Food intake Plan, you never waivered. You have said, that "I just expected that every week I would lose weight and I did." You also said, "I never contemplated a plateau, and I didn't have any." You took your Plan seriously and it worked for you! Every day you make sure that you walk. Every day you burn calaries. I never hear you complain about the fact that you can't have that 2nd or 3rd helping or that you have to go and walk today. You just do it! Every day you do what we all need to do, You eat healthy and you excercise and you maintain your weight. You have said that you are a different man since losing weight. Ever since I met you, you have been an inspiration to me. You have encouraged me for the past year that I have known you and I thank you for it. You are right when you say that we all must make a commitment to getting healthy and we must not waiver! With your great attitude it is no wonder that you are such a success in your own life and also an inspirational Model for us to follow in your footsteps.
Thank you for being you!

I agree your timing is perfect. I have been dreading the upcoming holidays. I have been decreasing in size nice and slow over the last 2 months and I don't want to gain back everything that I have worked so hard to lose. I am determined to continue to keep my food journal and walk the walks that have helped me along the way. I feel so much better in just two months. Why in the world would i put it all on the line for a silly cookie that I do not need. I pledge to keep on track, say focused and walk out of the year weighing less than I do today. Today is day one, I am accepting your challenge. emoticon Thanks for the post

Thanks Monty! That was wonderful!! In 2006 I lost 72lbs; since that time I gained around 10-15lbs back. My desire is to lose the 15lbs.

I already made up my mind what I will and will not eat. Definitely no seconds or sweets.

With that, I join you publicly in the commitment!

I don't only want to NOT GAIN over the holidays, I want to keep moving down on that scale!

I'm making a pledge to get down to "overweight" on the BMI chart by New Years Day. (that's 14 pounds away...) so if I lose just a little less than 2.5 pounds a week, I can do it.

That is an attainable goal, and will make me want to stay in my calorie range over these next 6 weeks when I'm cooking and baking and have constant candy and goodies floating around me.

It will get my butt out of bed on these cold mornings and on the road to walk and run. It will get me to the gym at night when I'd rather snuggle on the couch and watch holiday movies and stuff my face.

THANK YOU for writing this blog and proposing for us to do it along with you. You will be the 1st person I thank on 1/1/11 when I'm out of the "obese" range. I will be starting the new year healthier than I have been in 7 years... and you gave me the push to make this commitment to myself :)

Hi Monty, thank you so much for reminding us that its truly all about "how bad do we want it?". When we've all put the time and effort into our journeys why would we let the event, or holiday ruin it for us, or is it merely an excuse?

When you really as you have and I believe I have, caught the spark, you begin looking at food differently. I use to use food for everything, celebration, depression, boredom, and so on and so on, and now before eating I ask myself "are you really hungry?" Planning and portion control are key. You are so right, we can enjoy these life events but it really depends on our approach as to what the outcome will be. I am looking forward to the holidays but not for the food that is only one small aspect, its the gathering, the fun traditions, and this year I'm healthier and happier, and in years to come it will only get better.

Thank you for this wonderful blog, Congrats to you on your weight loss and maintainance as well as your CAN DO approach!
Happy Holidays Monty,
Debbie

    THANKS Monty,
I feel the same as you do.
I myself was on a road to destroy myself too.
I had to learn how to eat healthy & yea get off my A$$ & MOVE!!
Well emoticon to you & your at last DOING it & cause YOU TO WANT TO LIVE!!!
Me I have been almost 8yrs & still going strong living a healthy life style..
Foods on the Holidays really don't excite me like they use too cause I do know I never ever want to return to the old fat me.
I work at a Buffet, I see things that totally shock me like VERY obese people coming in & eating nonstop for 2-4 hours makes me sick knowing I too was one of them.
The sad part are the children of these people I watch them tell there kids to take a desert even before they eat there food which are not healthy of the buffet, no veggies & all fried foods.(on there plate)WE have a salad bar & yes some healthy foods too, BUT they seem to bypass them..
I want to SCREAM at the top of my lungs that they are leading there kids down a road of being unhappy like they are.

All I can say is Thanks & I'm 1 trillion % with you!!
You can enjoy the Holidays & in moderation..

Great blog Monty! You hit it right on the head. We need to stay focused and remember the holidays not focus on the food.
We started a family tradition several years ago (3 years for me as well) that we go for a walk on Thanksgiving Day and play Wii Just Dance on Chirstmas to get moving. We have alot of fun and it gets us moving!

Wow, that was succintly put...and probably told not only your story, but probably a lot of our stories. I am so glad that you haven't lost us.... and that you remain here to encourage the rest of us... I know I have gained over 10 lbs. just during Christmas - not even counting Halloween!!! But, it was during Christmas that I got really into eating healthy last year, and although I had a very lone-lasting plateau that I can't explain.... and then I spiralled out of control for over a month, I am back in control and the BOSS and hopefully with having to go to the city and eating out the next few weekends, I can maintain that control and find healthy choice and stop worrying about just buying the cheapest thing I can find... (old habits die hard!) but realize that I am worth it, I deserve the best...

Although the detox I have been on for 9 days has been disappointing, I have done it yearly for the last 10 years and always lost 8 lbs... this time with little slip-ups (like sushi) I am only down .5 lb, but at least it is on the other side of 200 again. I intend to continue the detox and then try to only add one type of food back at a time as they suggest. Since I have been off dairy and simple starches, I know a splurge back into those 2 food groups will invariabley cause a gain and it's been too hard to miss out on keeping it off after all this work...

I am so glad I waited to read your blog until today when I was more rested and not Sparked out for the day.

First - your blog truly brings back happy memories for me.

Second - so emoticon and inspirational - While I sit here remembering holidays past, I certainly know I do not miss the feelings of overeating, tiredness, and statements of "I can't believe I ate all that".

Lastly - What a emoticon reinforcement to this week's challenge - are we on the same page or what, only you have a much better way with words.

I am truly blessed and greatful this Thanksgiving season to have a emoticon like you.

Great blog Monty and so true that we don't have to gain weight just because it is the season. We don't have to deprive ourselves either, just eat smaller portions as you described.

I find it makes it easier for me if I focus on the people at the event as the 'highlight' not the food.

Here's to a successful season for all of us! emoticon
