I've laid the foundation . . .

Tuesday, November 02, 2010

On October 28th I posted a Blog titled: So . . . What's Next?
In it I proposed to begin building a cairn to commemorate my progress toward getting healthier -- and to post photos when the foundation had been laid.

For those of you who missed the first part of the story please read it at -

That will explain why I'm putting together this pile of rocks!

Now, once I'd decided what I wanted to do - I selected a site in my yard that is easy for me to view -and began building in stages. First I gathered stones from different places in Oregon, including our rocky coast, to define the area and have a raised surface upon which to build. It was like working on a puzzle. I kept trying different placements until I found one that seemed fairly sturdy.

Then I went to a landscape stoneworks to search for the foundation stone. They had tons (literally) of choices. I was conficent I'd know the right piece when I saw it. Sure enough -- it wasn't long before one particular piece with jagged, stepped edges called to me --- so I joyfully brought this beautiful piece of local quartzite to its new home.

It was sunny enough today to get a picture so here it is --

The dark stones appear so earthy. I feel grounded when I look at them. And I love the way the rough quartz sparkles (pun intended) in the sun. I think it is urging me on to keep building consistently on the foundation of healthy habits I've begun.

My plan is to place a new stone to mark each 3 months of my Journey toward Health. Watch for the next one in January, 2011.

What a wonderful sturdy foundation and making it a visual gives you accountability. May your beauty and 'Rock City' grow commensurately in the next few months.

I love this. The cairn I lay will need to be in my mind as I seem to keep moving from state to state (maybe one day I will land where I really do long to be - Oregon). This visible grounded foundation seems the opposite of a memorial: it is not a farewell to something departed but a deliberate observance of a journey still in process.

Wow!! What an amazing idea - and to go to that trouble to get the stones - it will be something you will build on and treasure for ever!!
That quartzite is lovely - the shape so unusual!! The shades of the other stones too are fascinating!!
I love the idea too - because you HAVE to finish it - so will always have motivation!!

We are in the process of re-landscaping our backyard and I'm defiantly going to borrow your idea and make a monument to my new life style!!!!

Thanks sweetie emoticon

I love quartz. when I was little, i collected rocks, and had many of these because i thought they had diamonds in them.
