Foster dog

Saturday, October 30, 2010

Today I am getting a golden retriever that I'll be fostering for a few months. This poor baby's owner has been in rehab for 9 months and a "friend" was suppose to take care of him. How they took care of him was to tie him in the back yard on a 6 foot long chain. *GRRRRRR* The owner needs to be in rehab for about another 6 months but didn't want to leave his precious baby in that environment anymore. He was devestated when he finally got to see him a month ago and how he's been living. The dog is 2 yrs old and has spent the last 9 months in the corner of a yard with no one playing with him or walking him. I'm a little nervoud because he's an intact male (so is Atlas, who is also 2 yrs old) and I'm not sure what kind of manners he has, if any. I'll have my hands full. I'll be taking him for walks everyday seperately from my walks with Atlas, until I see how/if they get along and how the goldie walks on a leash. I should rack up bunches of miles and steps !! BONUS !!!! There may be a LOT of training going on. He will be a house dog, just like my own, although will be seperated by a gate for the first ...well, however long it takes. I don't know what kind of shape he's in. If he's matted (probably) has fleas (most likely) , ticks?. So first thing Monday he goes to the vet and gets all his shots and checked for heart worms. Then it's off to the groomer. I feel bad for the poor dog. But by time he gets to home with his human he'll be pampered, loved, and well mannered. Time to go get his accomadations set up. He'll be here in a couple hours.

God bless you- I do some work with an animal resuce group where I live- We take dogs from kill shelters and foster them until they get adopted. We run adoption events at a PetsMart 2 times a month. I did foster a few times. The last was a Beagle that after a few weeks I adopted. I did have to give the Beagle back as it attacked my dog for coming near me. The Beagle liked to sit in my lap which was fine as my dog did not. When the Beagle attacked my dog for just coming near me- not good. Happy to report the Beagle got a wonderful home where she is an only dog. Also, my dog now sits in my lap. Happy ending for all. Again God bless you. emoticon emoticon
