Running for Literacy--Running for Me

Sunday, October 24, 2010

Okay--it always feels good to support an organization that's focussed on helping people--to know you are supporting others is a bit of a feel good thought. The fact that I'm an educator and believe in this cause doesn't hurt. However, to support an organization AND to challenge myself to improve makes the endeavour all the richer. Today I ran in my first offical 5K race and I had 2 goals--run it in under 40 mins. and run the whole route). I am celebrating this evening (well, I have been all day) because I achieved both goals--not only did I run the whole thing, but I managed to do it in 35:34 minutes.

It's funny, I thought once I had completed the goal, the running craze would end for me but already I'm planning for my next. It really is exciting to know that after 47 years I have finally figured out that I can run--it just took baby steps, lots of patience and lots of stamina. What a feeling!

For anyone out there thinking you can't do it--let me tell you the first time I went running for 30 second intervals--those were the longest 30 seconds of my life. I couldn't even imagine running for a full minute at that point. Now--piece of cake. We are all capable of dreaming big and accomplishing much--just start off with baby steps.

And now...The Santa Shuffle is my next venture. 5K for another worthy cause.
