5 Pounds of Fat vs 5 Pounds of Muscle (cool photo)

When I get grumpy about the scale, I'm going to come back to this picture. Look at the difference in volume between 5 pounds of muscle and 5 pounds of fat. Isn't it amazing?

So even if the scale isn't moving, or has, as in this week, moved UP a few pounds, I'm going to remind myself if I'm exercising consistently and working to increase intensity, I'm building muscle. Muscle is denser than fat and takes up less space. Muscle also has weight to it - if I'm building it, in a sense I am adding weight to my body. Muscle requires more calories to sustain - whether you're working or resting it. So I want muscles!!!

Even if the scale stays the same or goes up a bit, trading muscle for fat will make me smaller.

  There is another variable there you might also want to consider and that is water! I used to work out heavily and although it seemed I was loosing weight fast. It wasn't just the fat. I was not re-hydrating properly. So when someone says to me I just lost 5 pounds in 5 days! I'm a bit skeptical. It's most water that they loose not body fat.

    OK now you are making me feel better. I have not seen the scale go down - just up and down the last two months. Frustrating as I seem to be in a cycle here of 154-156. I want to break into the 140's. I am fit and have been working out- strength training twice a week, so I am sure part of this is the muscle building. I pray that is what it is!

    After seeing this pic on your blog, I found a similar pic & added it to my page (hope you don't mind). I'm most definitely gonna use it as a motivator. I also found a full body MRI showing fat & muscle on Google ----------- that was gross too.

    I didn't know there was such a difference. Explains why I can gain weight and get smaller when I take on a new activity, such as cycling. All those leg muscles are heavy!
