Cleaning cupboards and small goals.

Friday, October 22, 2010

I hate cleaning cupboards. I can't believe the things that i stuff in there to save. I spent all morning convincing myself that the wonderful work i was doing on Spark People was a good reason to put off the cupboard cleaning... then I remembered what I preach - small steps and small goals. I have 12 sets of cupboards in my kitchen. Yes I know I am luck to have all that storage space (that doesn't include the 12 drawers.), yet.... all that space and my "just in case I need it" mentality is not a good combination.
So rather than thinking I needed to do all the cupboards in one day, I choose two. I also included DH in the process. It turns out we were ready to get rid of different items, but usually didn't object to giving or throwing away the items the other chose. I also thought about how we use the items as opposed to an "artistic" (read extremely organized) arrangement of the items. DH was very pleased with the final result and we still have time for lunch, a bike ride and to get to a late afternoon lecture at the local university. Have I mentioned that I love retirement?

Not my favorite task, either, but I love the way things get tidied up and everything is in reach when I do it -- every three years or so. While in Houston last week, I did some straightening of kitchen cabinets and bathroom cupboard at my friend's home. It was easy to do for her, just as it is always easy to be wise for other people. Sigh.

saw your blog and had to comment on it.. I have been working the past 3 days on my cupboards.. I have a closet that is a little bigger than a broom closet and crammed full of stuff that we do not use so today that was my project..

It feels good to accomplish something and it is so much easier when we break it up into smaller chores.. congrats on the retirement..I love it also..

enjoy your bike ride.. emoticon

Good for you for breaking up the task into a manageable amount to do for one day. It sounds as if you accomplished a lot---good for you!!
I love retirement too.
