Lactose Intolerance Discovered

Thursday, October 21, 2010

I've been on the gluten free diet for about two weeks now, and I feel way better. My mood swings and depression are virtually gone, and bowel symptoms had lightened considerably.

But on Monday, I went to my friends house for dinner. She's gluten intolerant as well, so I knew I wouldn't have to worry about it. Afterwards I felt bloated and tired, so I couldn't figure it out. The next day, I had a baked potato for lunch, and again, felt bloated and tired.

I did some research online, and found out that other intolerances can cause the same symptoms. I have been keeping a food journal, so I looked into it, and the only thing I had eaten at the bloated meals that I hadn't eaten at the meals I felt good after was sour cream, and butter. Lactose is in both, so that may have been the culprit. I eliminated it, and I haven't been gasy since.

Wow I miss chocolate. So I bought chocolate soy milk. Yummy. I feel so much better I could jump for joy!

    Respected friend:
Both butter and sour cream have far less lactose than milk itself, so you may be dealing with a true casein intolerance. If you liked the soymilk, I definitely recommend Purely Decadent soy-based ice cream; it's one of the best out there in the not-outrageous price span. Tofutti's good, and just about the cheapest, but the flavors are limited and they aren't quite gluten-free (the equipment is cleaned with whatever alcohol is cheapest, which means it may or may not include trace gluten at any given moment.)
I'm one of your team moderators. I've been gf/cf for more than ten years. If you have any specific questions, feel free to write me directly.

Thanks for the comment. Apparently even the slightest bit of milk affects me. So I have to avoid it altogether. But I feel so much better I'm glad to not eat it.

I just found out about a year ago for my Slight lactose intolerance. It sorta sucks but at least its something you can easily deal with!
