Weird Things Excite Me

Friday, October 15, 2010

Oh good, I have your attention. HA! Nothing scandalous here, I'm afraid.
I am excited though! A few days ago the hubby and I received a flyer in the mail for $15 off our first order through a CSA! I've wanted to sign up for a CSA since I found out what they were, but could never afford the start up cost. This one is cool though because it's only $30 per order and you can get an order weekly or every other weekly. Plus you can quit whenever you want. So I figured what the heck, the first one would only be $15 and I can finally try it out. So we signed up. Our first box arrives next Tuesday. Last night I got the listing of what will be in our box and we got to customize it a bit (took out a squash we won't use and swapped it for mushrooms that I know we WILL use). I'm really looking forward to picking up the box! Me excited about produce. Sheesh. I know this sounds like an ad, but it isn't. I'm just finally getting to do something I've really wanted to. I couldn't really afford the stuff from the grocery, it's all organic and I just can't afford 4.99 for a dozen eggs, even if they are super-eggs that are going to make my family sparkle and see in the dark or whatever. So I'll stick to picking up milk, eggs, bread, etc at Fred Meyer, but I'm looking forward to trying some fruits & veggies I woudn't have tried otherwise. I think the kids are going to get a kick out of this too.
Anybody here tried a CSA? What was your experience?

I've never really thought of myself as adventurous, but I am really thrilled to get to try some different things! Plus, we will be challenged to figure out how to use the stuff. We are getting baby bok choy in this box so combine that with the carrots and mushrooms and I have fixings for a stir-fry. Good stuff! Plus, fresh carrots right fro the ground? Yum! Our delivery is right across the street from us so it's no issue to pick up. I bet they do deliver to my work, but our campus is insanely huge, so it would probably be more difficult than the other drop-off.

I love my CSA. $22 bucks for a mystery basket (that's the fun for me, I'm an adventerous eater and cook) AND they deliver to my work! Awesome!
