Get a Tdap vaccine to protect infants you come in contact with

Friday, October 15, 2010

A whooping cough outbreak this year in California has already sickened more than 5,270 infants and killed nine, the agency reported. That rate of illness is the highest recorded in the state since 1955, according to the California Department of Public Health.

The best way to protect yourself and the infants you come into contact from getting whooping cough -- also known as pertussis -- is the tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine, the CDC advises.

Very scary indeed. My mom had a friend who also refused to vaccinate her daughter for anything. When whooping cough broke out, that child nearly died. I'll never forget Maureen crying pitifully while my mom held her tiny little girl over a steaming bath to help her breathe. Some don't vaccinate and I don't have an opinion on that, but mine got all the vaccinations they needed.....the picture was too scary.
However, unless a threat of death, my kids don't get antibiotics. So I guess each to his own way of raising kids.

Both my husband and I got one this year. The Utah health department is giving them for free.

An adult gets very sick, but an infant or young child could die from the disease.
