I am a marathoner 10/10/10

Sunday, October 10, 2010

Today was the big day for me in running not only my first marathon but my longest race over 5.6 miles. I was fortunate enough to have a fellow spark person, Wongerchi, help me in my journey. It was a rainy day and the wind was up a little too. I can not put into words the feelings I had while running but it covered so many spectrum's. I never felt like I could not complete it and overall I really felt good the whole time. I got to talk to several people and hear so many stories of why they were running. The oddest thing to me was running for a short time near a girl who did it bare foot. It was so wet and nasty I can not imagine. For anyone considering it I say go for it, you won't regret any of it when you cross the finish line and people are cheering for you. People you most likely will never meet in your life.

I must have heard my name called out 200 times and it really does lift you when your head is down and you are getting tired. I know that the energy of the crowd helped me finish it standing upright. Thanks to any and all the volunteers and spectators. A special thanks to whomever was handing out the beer at mile 23. Talk about a lifting of spirits. The official timing website is down but my garmin, which died within 5 minutes of crossing the line said 4:55:09.23 and a grand total of 26.45 miles. My knees are stiff and my left calf is sore but I am on cloud 9.

I just started training for my first marathon (in March 2011) and I've never run more than a 5k. Your post definitely reinforces my goal of completing it inspite of the naysayers in my life!

Thank you for sharing your experience!

That is amazing to have your longest run only be 5.6 miles and then tackling a FULL marathon! That blows my mind.

I'm still working up to running a 5K but one day I'd like to be able to say I'm a 1/2 marathoner or a marathoner too!!

Congratulations on completing your first marathon! I went down to watch a fellow spark buddy, Keekman, take off and was amazed at all of the people, both runners and spectators who showed up.
