Tomatoes and Good Jobs

Thursday, October 07, 2010

I ran across this info today. Here's a way to keep good jobs in the US.

Eurofresh's pesticide-free tomatoes have been named "America's Best Tasting Tomato" by the Culinary Institute of America for more than 10 years. They've shown that you can build a successful green business and:

* Respect workers' rights and their union. Paul Rubin from the workers' union, UFCW Local 99, says the company and union have "a very cooperative relationship," and talk daily about employee health and safety.
* Provide workers with the health insurance they need. The company's employees get full family healthcare coverage with no premium costs.
* Pay workers a fair wage. Eurofresh employees earn about 65 percent more than non-union agricultural workers.
* Create a safe work environment. In Eurofresh's greenhouse, there are fewer ergonomic injuries than in the open field and no exposure to harsh weather conditions and contaminants.

As you know, one of the best ways to support a company is to buy its products! So keep an eye out for Eurofresh tomatoes at Safeway, Costco, and Albertsons!

Thanks for sharing this interesting information. I sometimes buy tomatoes at Costco but don't recall the name. Will check next time. They're very nice tomatoes. You are so right about supporting fair and ethical businesses.

I have not seen these tomatoes, either, but good for you! I am growing my own for the summer and in the winter I usually do without, but I am thinking about fixing a greenhouse of sorts so that I can continue to enjoy them.
