All or Nothing Approach

Sunday, October 03, 2010

I am being challenged by an unhealthy attitude that goes along the lines of if I can NOT do it 100% then I should not do it! I am shaking my head trying to think of where that way of thinking came from. I really don't think it was from my mother or my father. I guess it is just my own and I have to own up to it, confront it, and put something else in its spot.
Sal that all or nothing approach is going to sabotage you. It is not realistic and it is not helpful one iota! Just because you are not doing something 100% does not mean you are failing to complete the project! One day at a time, one hour at a time, heck one second at a time that is the way. Reduce life down into manageable bits of time! You can do it!
What to put in its place??? How about a more forgiving attitude that says its OKAY. The only failing is when you give up. Therefore the logical solution is to JUST DON'T GIVE UP!

What's so dangerous about all-or-nothing thinking is that if we do something off-plan, we get discouraged and think it doesn't matter what we do for the rest of the day since we've already blown it. But as IndiGirl says, two slices of pizza will always have more calories than one! We have to live this out in real life, and even though a certain commitment is important, perfection is impossible.

Could have written this blog myself...oh, that all-or-nothingness is a constant struggle.Like you said, I have to break things down and reinforce the persistence vs perfection. Good luck Sal! I think you have plenty of company...a lot of us are in the same boat...

Uh-huh. I see how it is... You got somethin' you wanna say to me, and you're scared to, so you write this blog as if it's happening to you. emoticon

I wonder, though. What if we DID do it 100% perfect? Then what? Where do we go from there? What is our next challenge in life? And who could stand to be around us???

Reducing is a great idea. I do it with projects at work all the time. Guess I need to learn to apply it to the rest of my life. Just so ya know... I like you just the way you are! emoticon

Way to go, Sal. The winners are the ones who are persistent, not perfect. Look how far you've come. How did you do that? We never give up!
