The Power Of Pictures

Friday, October 01, 2010

Funny the power of the mind at sabotaging your efforts. That is half the battle in realizing your goals. After losing 42 pounds in about 3.5 months I was actually hearing myself say, oh you really havent changed that much it would be so easy for you to go back to where you were. Thank goodness I was able to recognise these sabotaging thoughts and cut them off at the pass before they had any effect on my efforts. Wow, progress. I turned to my husband for support who reminded me of some things I had forgotten about my progress. That led me to really take a look at some photos I had that clealy show how I was feeling before I started compared to how I feel now in my current photos. The difference is obvious. I am a much happier, energetic, and thinner person now taking pride in how I look for I am proud of the investment and commitment I have made not only to myself but my family. Take a look at my pictures and think long and hard about where you have come from and where you want to be in your journey. What a refreshing realization to see you are unfolding the you-you really want to be.

What reminders do you have in place to help you in these sabotaging moments?

Exacly IMK, when I think of how far I still have to go... Seems like the last 40 have haunted me all my life. The only difference this time is I can see that negativity trying to sabotage me and I have the right tool. We will get there!

Good for you, cutting off those sabotaging thoughts before they could gain a foothold! Yes, every little reminder of my changes help me when I really start to doubt my progress. I see myself in pictures and that makes me realize how far I've come. Especially on those days where I feel overwhelmed by how much further I have to go to get where I want to be, thinking back to where I started and how much farther away I was then gets me motivated again!

Great idea about using photos. I always get disgusted at some of my photos at my highest weight. That is always a reminder why I'm working so hard!!

    Thanks for the blog.

You are doing so great with this journey to better health- and so glad that you did not give into the negatives. We are our own worst critics, and also the ones who can easily sabotage all of our hard work. Remember that we are all here for you when you need an extra pep talk,

Congratulations!!! Good for you--Rock On!! Thanks for reminding me of the proper response to that whiny, throw roadblocks into my path, voice. "Get the canoli outta here!" "Are you craazy!" "I can feel the difference--it might not be showing much yet;but I KNOW!" "No round trips this time--so get to gettin'!"

I guess this is what they mean when they say nothing tastes as good as thin feels. Or in my case as good as getting thin feels emoticon emoticon

How true this is. A picture is worth a thousand words!

My reminders include Sparkpeople....but also my clothes, how they fit, are they loser even though the scale is unchanged?
YUP! AND the tape measure, it a big teller too!

You have done great and your pictures will show it. Post an old one on your mirror so when you look at yourself you will see how far you have come.

Thanks for this post! I too have been avoiding the camera because I hate all pictures of myself. It's sad - it looks like I'm missing out even though I was there! But I recently listened to the advice and had my boyfriend take some pictures - hoping that they will soon be 'before' pictures!

    Keep on Sparkin'!

Wow, that's really good. I often look at myself and think I look exactly the same. Now, I wish I had taken pics 24 pounds ago!

    Congrats on your success.

Good work recognizing the negative self-talk! It is not always easy.

I try to nip my self-talk in the bud by chatting with other people. Spark definitely helps, and I like to clue my family and friends in too, so they can help me stay accountable.
