I live in the city of Detroit and we have a local nonchain grocery store and you never know what bargains you will find there. Organics sell for the same price as nonorganics since most inner city Detroiters won't pay for the difference. I have found organic raspberries for $.49 per pint! When I find these bargains, I buy all that they have and work feverishly to store all of my treasures.
So, today they had organic strawberries for $.99 for a one pound package! I put them on cookie sheets in one layer and stuck them in the freezer. Once they were frozen I poured them in bags and back in the freezer they went.
They also had tomatoes on sale for $.49 for 6 tomatoes. I peeled and quartered them and roasted them with garlic, onions, olive oil and salt and pepper. Then I pureed the whole pan in the food processor. Tomorrow's task will be to put it in bags and store it in the freezer. Then I will have sauce starter for the winter.
My love of cooking and love of a bargain really paid off today. We will see what tomorrow brings.
