Patriot's Day

Friday, September 10, 2010

Well I really wish the US Congress hadn't called September 11 Patriot's Day, it reminds me too much of those insensitive Patriot's acts...but as much as I am a critic of the American political scene and the Republican and Democratic foibles in Washington, I really do honor Patriot's Day.

It was conceived as a day to honor the fallen at the Twin Towers, Pentagon and the downed flight in Pennsylvania, but it was also planned as a day for Americans to get out and do something to improve their communities, state or nation.

Just as MLK Day is my favorite holiday because of the service we give to others (instead of take) I think Patriot's Day can and should become a day of service too.
Even if it just sprucing up your neighborhood, visiting a shut-in, planting some flowers, volunteering where needed your small acts, multiplied by millions of Americans doing likewise can make this country a better place.

I plan to pick up litter around my neighborhood.

What will you be doing today to show your patriotism?

I would like to have done some service today, but I am behind in studying the things to help my students at school, so today I will study. I guess in a way that is a service because it is my day off but I am working on learning so that I can help the students learn.

Gathering with my nephew and his mommies. Remembering 9/11/01 and the love and solidarity throughout the world that lasted as long as Mr. Bush let it. Remembering and honoring our human commonality.

Thanks for your service. Today, my "service" will be just prayers.

I like the idea of service too. I don't think it should just be on certain holidays., but good Americans serve fellow citizens everyday.

I will try to be a friendly face to all I see when I visit my daughter at the hospital today.

You sure do your part in service and I admire you for it.
