One Pain-Free Day

Friday, September 10, 2010

I had a cortisone epidural on Wednesday and yesterday, for the first time in so long I can't remember, I had an almost pain-free day. I could walk like I wasn't 100 and actually made it through I workout DVD.

The relief was short-lived. I woke up an hour or two after midnight in agony and have been up ever since.

So, I guess the answer is staring me in the face. The disc degeneration is at the point where surgery is the only option.

I've already sent an email to the pain clinic to send the MRI and x-rays to the referral neurosurgeons and schedule the meetings. I want to make sure the doctors think they can help before driving hundreds of miles to see them.

The pain center recommends not having the surgery here since they only do what I need every few years. So, they're finding surgeons who do this on a regular basis.

My goal is to get this done before winter. (It had actually been to have this taken care of this summer, but ....)

It's so difficult to live with pain like that; surgery does seem to be the last option with all you've tried already. I hope the neurosurgeons will be able to help and that you'll get permanent relief.

As info, the pain clinic was the 6th referral. The shots were a last-ditch effort to avoid spinal fusion.

Carrie, if the insurance will allow it - think about getting a second opinion. This is a big decision.
