Yesterday started out great. I did some exercises and walked to the post office. I was expecting the prescription for the prep for my endoscopy and colonoscopy which was scheduled for 10 am Wednesday. When it wasn't there, called the doctor's office to see what they wanted me to do. She said she would call the prescription in to my drug store but I could not have anything by mouth on Tuesday except water and clear liquids...no food. Even though I wasn't hungry beforehand, I immediately thought I was going to starve to death. lol I call the drug store about 1/2 hour later to see if I could pick it up around 3 pm as I would be in town to get McKenzie. They told me I needed to come now as I was to start the prep at noon. So at just shortly after 10 am, we arrive at the drug store. Got the prep, paid the bill and looked at the instructions. At the top of the paper, the first thing I see is that if you have kidney problems, you cannot use this...see the pharmacist. The cashier who waited on me said, "I didn't know you had kidney problems!" After replying that I was hospitalized the last week of November, 2008 in total kidney failure, she said no one ever told me. I just smiled and said, "I'm sorry." The pharmacist had to call the gastroenterologist office to see what prep they wanted to switch. This took 45 minutes as their line was busy. I then had to talk with the doctors office to answer questions regarding my kidney function. Ok, so now I need a different prep. She tells me to tell the pharmacist to give me "who knows what now" but it is an over the counter prep and is in the refrigerated section. I repeated this to myself three times so I would remember it. But her next statement was that the prep was a two-day prep and I couldn't eat anything but clear liquid for two days. WHAT??? YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!! Nothing to eat for two days. I can't eat anything for two days. No food for two days. Unbelievable...do they not know I am a diabetic??!!! Who are they kidding??!!! Well by the time, I walked across the drug store, probably 30 feet, I totally forgot what the prep was called. The name was totally gone...I COULDN'T EAT FOR TWO DAYS!!!
I tried to remember what the prep was and told the pharmacist it was OTC and refrigerated and the prep took two days.. She had not idea what I was talking about. NO FOOD FOR TWO DAYS!!! She named a couple of preps and one of them sounded right and I told her I thought it was the right one. She said she had to talk to them to make sure. Another hour and 25 minutes to get hold of the office. In the meantime, they called me on my cell phone which I had left in the car. Who knew I would have this kind of a problem? After talking with the pharmacist, they changed their minds again to an entirely different prep. They had to change the date of the tests to Thursday as I had to do a two day prep. I am still in shock!! The other customers in the drug store were in shock and upset that I couldn't eat for two days. One guy even asked what my problem was that they wouldn't let me eat for two days. "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?" he asked loudly. You should just tell them what they can do with that test and go home and eat. Well I just couldn't do that...I needed to have the tests run. What started out as a simple trip to the drug store for a two minute pickup ended up taking over three hours. We never left there until after 1:30.
We left the store, stopped at the school district's main office to pay our health insurance premium, stopped by DD's house and let her furbabies out for a little while to do their business and went home. By the time I made a pit stop and got two more bottles of water, I had to get back to town for McKenzie's bus.
I am still working on the prep and not eating, but I can tell it is going to be a long night...especially since I can't have anything after midnight and my tests are sometime after 10:00 (arrival time at hospital). I hope I survive. I started the prep...
I praise God for all the modern technology and medicines that are available today. But I think there really should be an easier way.
I will try to check back in sometime late tomorrow evening...after I get something to eat and have some energy back. lol Sure hope I quick sloshing soon. I am staying away from the river and trying not to lean to much to either side for fear of capsizing or listing.
Just remember...when you think you are having a bad day, somebody else's day just could be worse. It all depends on how you look at things!!
Have a wonderful week and upcoming weekend whatever your plans are, remembering to be thankful for what you do/do not have.
