Scale and C25K success

Monday, August 16, 2010

After losing my ID card last week, I couldn't go to the gym on Friday. I went and got a replacement today, and then hit the gym. Weighed in as usual and -- hold the phone, 141?! I was at 138 last week! I started at 143 a month ago! I don't understand how I can possibly be back up to 141.

So I was upset for a while. It was demoralizing to see myself starting through the 130s and suddenly be right back almost to square one.

But I completely rocked out on W5D1 of Couch to 5K -- three 5-minute runs, no problem at all. I felt great after that, and feel very confident about the 8-minute runs coming up on Wednesday.

So I don't know what is up with the scale number. But my increasing stamina proves that my work is getting me somewhere. I will just keep at it, and the scale will follow along when it wants to.

Leftsox, it is funny how we make a big deal out of those round numbers, when they're just arbitrary points!

I also know what you mean about new weeks giving you the jitters. This is my fourth attempt at C25K and last time I psyched myself out at W4D1, because of the 5 minute runs. This time I've been purposefully keeping my speed slower than I think I can run. When I get nervous, I tell myself if a run gets to be too much, I can always slow down more, or cut it short and walk if I have to. That has been helping me not psych myself out.

During the runs I try to focus on my breathing and my form -- relaxing my upper body, pushing from the hips and glutes rather than the knees, straightening my posture -- and that helps me mentally get through the time.

Rainthief, I honestly don't know. TOM was last week -- I expected (and had) a temporary gain then, but didn't expect one this week. Maybe I haven't been drinking enough water lately, so my body is holding onto it? I made sure to chug a ton yesterday and am working on it today. Hopefully that will help.

Keep rockin' the C25k. The scale will catch up. :) I don't know what's with this water in our bodies sometimes...

It's muscle, water - time of month? Many things are possible. I know that mine fluctuates a lot. When it isn't normal fluctuation, you will know - like when i jumped from 157 to 168 in 2 months! Yikes! Back on the Spark train!

Keep rocking C25K - the results you want will come in time - in the meantime, feel great about what you are doing and ignore that deceptive scale!

Well, my personal opinion is this: All the even numbers are the hardest to pass, as in 200, 190, 180....140..130.. For some reason we make such a big deal out of getting into the next set of tens but really we all yo yo down the scales and so will you...

You'll be fine, you are further along in the program and I am struggling in week 4 day 1 with the five min runs but I did one full one today and I think that I scared myself out of the other one! LOL For some reason new weeks give me the jitters! I don't know what it is but I have these weird anxiety attacks about it! emoticon
