Until.

Monday, August 16, 2010

I am a Dr. Phil McGraw disciple... I believe he comes from a discipline, and has training, similar to my own. He, however, has a better way with a sound bite.

One of the most frustrating questions a client ever asks is, "How long do I have to do this (insert uncomfortable, new, challenging, difficult, reluctant - you get the idea - behaviour here)?"

He always says, "You do 'it' until."

...And before Dr. Phil came into my life, there was Nike...

"A woman is often measured by the things she cannot control.
She is measured by the way her body curves or doesn't curve, where she is flat or straight or round, she is measured by 36-24-36 and inches and ages and numbers, by all the outside things that don't ever add up to who she is on the inside.
And so if a woman is to be measured, let her be measured by the things she can control, by who she is and who she is trying to become.
Because, as every woman knows, STATISTICS LIE."

"My shoulders aren't dainty or proportional to my hips.
Some say they are like a man's.
I say leave men out of it.
They are mine.
I made them
in a swimming pool
then I went to yoga
and made my arms."

"My hips
return to puberty
when I'm in dance class.
Music affects them like hormones
making them crazy
and spontaneous
and optimistic
and prone to drama
and I don't understand them
and sometimes they
don't understand themselves.
When the music stops they're still charged...
don't touch me...
sparks will fly."

"My butt is big
and round like the letter C
and ten thousand lunges
have made it rounder
but not smaller
and that's just fine.
It's a space heater
for my side of the bed
it's my ambassador
to those who walk behind me
it's a border collie
that herds skinny women
away form the best deals
at clothing sales.
My butt is big
and that's just fine
and those who might scorn it
are invited to kiss it."

"I have
thunder thighs.
And that's a compliment
because they are strong
and toned
and muscular
and though they are unwelcome
in the petite section
they are cheered on in marathons.
Fifty years from now
I'll bounce a grandchild on my thunder thighs
and then I'll go out for a run."

"My knees
are tomboys.
They get bruised and cut
every time I play soccer.
I'm proud of them
and wear my dresses short.
My mother worries
I will never marry
with knees like that.
But I know
there's someone out there
who will say to me:
I love you
and I love your knees.
I want the four of us
to grow old together."

"My legs
were once two hairy sticks
that weren't very good at jump rope
but by the time I reached
the age of algebra
they had come into their own
and now in spin class they are revered.
Envied for their strength
honoured for their beauty
hairless for the most part
except that place the razor misses
just behind the ankles."

"That's right. I'm out of here.
Do not chase me down
or text me
or try to talk me into going out to lunch.
I don't have time to figure out
if I have time for a run.
I'm just going.
The world will not fall apart in my absence.
I might miss somebody's birthday cake
or a discussion of last night's season finale.
Even if I do, who cares.
I'm coming back with a state of mind
three coffees,
two flirtatious e-mails
and a week of vacation
can't buy."

Whatever it is that gives you that 'three coffees, two flirtatious emails, a week of vacation' feeling...

Whatever it is that celebrates your shoulders and arms and hips and butt and thighs and knees and legs...

Whatever it is that belies anything anyone thinks they know about you...

Whatever it is that makes you feel alive and vibrant and vibrating with vitality...

Whatever it is that gives you a sense of accomplishment that only pushing beyond limits can give you...

Whatever it is that makes you cry with determination well placed and hold your head up with stubborn pride...

Whatever it is you dream about and long for and ache to embrace because it is really who you are inside...

Because it is who you were created to be...

JUST DO IT.

UNTIL.

May today and every day bring to you a ridiculous abundance of whatever you need. May all your concerns, struggles, anxieties and fears fall like ashes as you rise on eagle's wings, SOARING above all that would hinder you along this tremendous adventure of being and becoming all you are created to be. May the grace of God simply "overtake" you moment by moment. May the joy and victory of the risen Lord be yours in a very personal way... may you always be overwhelmed by the grace of God, rather than by the cares of life!

There's some great poetry here. Evocative, poignant, articulate. Talented!

Nicely wrought.

This was just the right thing to start my day!!! I couldn't agree more. Have you heard the Amy Grant song (I just started hearing it on the radio but I don't know if it's new) that has a line it it that calls us all such "beautiful messes" and how a heart cry of surrender and finally giving up all our struggles to rest in His comfort is better than a "Hallelujah"?

That's a paraphrase, but I really love that line. We are beautiful messes aren't we? I think that's a good way to look at it. I used to think that someday if I tried hard enough, I would feel like I'd "arrived". But now I know, there would always be another place to go. That's a good thing.

And you're right, we just do it until . . . . great words from a great heart.

Have a wonderful day, Jan
