Saturday - life brings changes

Saturday, August 14, 2010

Things are changing for us lately. My father in law needs more care these days. He has trouble with stairs and standing for a long period of time. As some Italians do, they have done their home living in the basement where there is another full kitchen area, living area and 1/2 bath. The stairs are basically stairs to the basement and there are many. He is in his 80's and has been a very active gardener until the last few seasons. I have been managing the garden duties for them. We downsized it this year, but they are getting some nice, fresh produce for meals and they enjoy watching the stuff grow. My husband built them a very large planter close to where they like to be on their patio so he can still play in the dirt and grow his own (if you are gardener, you know how satisfying that is!). He doesn't have to bend over. It was tough getting him to realize he couldn't drive any more, either. My mother in law doesn't drive and never has. This life change is a challenge, but I am still eating right, exercising daily and logging in to try to keep on track. I will not stop even though my schedule has changed a bit. It could even be a blessing in disguise since I've been in a bit of a rut.

I'm glad it's Saturday...my favorite day of the week. I'm heading to the farmers' market very soon, then off to do some weekly errands that I enjoy. It's my "me" time.

Your inlaws are very lucky to have you. Take care of yourself, too!

I know what you are going through with the father in law. We are crossing the same bridge with my mom. Although she doesn't garden she loves the eat what I grow. I didn't think she was going to be able to come up here this year because her health has gone down hill... it is really hard to see them change like that but we do learn what we should be doing to take care of ourselves. Hope you had a wonderful weekend! Take care emoticon

You are very wise to take care of you, too, as you lovingly care for your father-in-law. Your health, diet and exercise is equally important and I hope you create time to Take care of Precious You!

I hope you have a great time and find some wonderful finds at the farmers' market. Take your time, and enjoy the quiet times and social times you get. Caretaking is a demanding job.
