The Adventures of Building a house

You asked me to blog about what I remember about building my house so I'll try. First I would like to say that my husband and I both built it and he did alot more work on it than I did but I also was pregnant, then had a newborn, then he got older and older and we were still building it. There are still a few things that need to be done but not that much. We got married in 1980 and bought an old fixer upper that we renovated and a duplex at the same time that we renovated so after we sold those we bought our land and started to build. We started by digging a place out of the woods to put it, we put up a block foundation, I stirred up all the concrete with a mixer while my husband layed the blocks. I think it took us a whole summer to do that. We also didn't have any water yet so we had to go to the nieghbors who graciously let us fill up a barrel with waterevery time we needed water we had to bring that barrel over and fill it up. We also both worked full time jobs and would do this building after work and on weekends. Alot of times we camped in a trailer until we put up a little shed that had bunk beds and a little couch and I would cook on a hot plate. The next summer we worked on the upper part of the house with the wood. Our house is passive solar which means the whole front of the house is windows facing south toward the sun. Even if its 40 below our house is warm with no heat as long as the sun is out. Then we heat with wood at night and on cloudy days. Its also super insulated with the walls being a foot thick. We were in the green movement before there even was a green movement. Now my husband is looking at this saying I have to mention he did more than I did, which I will say again, MEN!! Mostly I was a gopher, go for this go for that. Now I do all the work, he's so lazy I can't get him to do anything.LOL After the shell of the house was up , its just a matter of putting the plywood on the roof trusses the roof, the windows and then you can start on the inside by putting all the wiring , plumbing, insulation and sheetrock , floors, painting and the cabinets , cupboards,etc..... See I told you its not that hard, Right!, Ha. This is just a short story about a long, several year journey we took when we were very young and in shape. I really don't think either of us would be able to do it again. I'm proud that we did it though. You can do anything if you put your mind to it. Now we just sit back and enjoy the view. Thanks for coming by my sparkpage.
